MIAMI.- U.S. trade with the Dominican Republic grew by 8.3 percent in the first half of the year, reaching $5.3 billion. The growth was due to U.S. exports increasing by 17.8 percent, which helped offset a 4.7 percent decline in U.S. imports from the Dominican Republic, according to a Latin Business Chronicle analysis of trade data from the US Census Bureau for the first half of the year.
US exports to the Dominican Republic reached $3.3 billion, while imports from the Dominican Republic ended up at $2.0 billion. The Dominican Republic was one of only three countries in Latin America that posted a decline in its exports to the U.S. market during the first six months this year, according to the analysis.
The Dominican Republic remains the largest U.S. trading partner in the CAFTA trade group and the country is the seventh-largest export market in Latin America for US goods - ahead of larger economies like Peru and Ecuador.
All in all, U.S. trade with Latin America reached $318.9 billion in the first half of 2008, an increase of 19.7 percent from the same period last year, according to the Latin Business Chronicle analysis. That means U.S. trade with the region is picking up. By comparison, total trade last year only grew by 6.2 percent.

So we are $1.3 billion in the RED vis-a-vis the US. What about the overall BALANCE of TRADE vis-a-vis the REST of the WORLD? Who writes this stuff? Ray Charles?

Of course, corrupt, parasitic, and rotten elements of the Dominican bourgeoisie will try to sneak into the trade deal and steal everything in sight whether or not it's nailed down.
In addition to the sabotage of the corrupt, parasitic, and rotten elements of the Dominican bourgeoisie, the bourgeois state in the Santo Domingo must watch out for the sabotage of comprador elements of the Dominican bourgeoisie.
Compradors are more dangerous than the corrupt, parasitic, and rotten elements of the Dominican bourgeoisie.

i am encouraged. i feel invigorated. we are getting somewhere, albeit slowly. why do i feel so spry, you ask? well, i will tell you. the forum is working to educate people. not so long ago, when trade figures were announced, certain cheerleader types would jump with glee, declaring us to be flying over the moon with success. didn't matter to them that the balance of trade in favor of the USA and other trading partners was in a state of distressing disequilibrium.they just saw a big number, a composite figure, and the celebration was on. with the passage of time, their enthusiasm seems to have been tempered by understanding of the numbers, because posters who understand these issues have been educating them. so , DT, you are serving a useful purpose, at least for those who have the wherewithal to understand.

Dread is that a left handed swipe at CAFTA because if it is ......save your breath CAFTA is the best hope for this country.....remember the wheelbarrow...it is agriculture that is the future
From: United States
it most certainly is not. it is a right handed swipe at those who are too impatient to analyse things before they start with the fanfare and trumpets. i am not in a position to make a proper assessment of CAFTA vis a vis the DR, because of its short tenure to this point. and i agree with you 100% about agriculture. on that issue, you are preaching to the choir. i have worn out my keyboard speaking about value added agriculture as the savior. i have some ideas i would like to pass on to you on this subject. i will not put them in the comments, because two weeks from now some dude will be starting them up.
