Santo Domingo.- The Transport Reform Office (Opret) concentrates all its efforts into placing the first line of the Santo Domingo Metro (Subway) into operation by November, and commuters can ride it on that date as planned.

Opret assistant director Leonel Carrasco said the start date is firm, although he cannot talk of a second line. “I’m not into thingking of that, I’m into finalizing the first line to hand it over, because we have a very strict program for November."

He said the cars are being received, the elevators are being finished, “ant that’s what we are concerned about. As to the other (2nd line) I cannot advance anything."

Great news , and I see a lot of work going on so it looks like they back on 'track"

This describes all you sad sad people.

1. naysayer 58 up, 14 down
One who frequently engages in excessive complaining, negative banter and/or a genuinely poor and downbeat attitude. Naysayers are distinguished by their tendency to consistently view the glass half empty, make frequent one-way trips to negative town, and constantly emphasize the worst of a situation. They have the capacity to rant and whine for hours on end about the most insignificant inconveniences. They tend to travel solo, but have the keen ability to spread their pessimistic attitude to a group of unsuspecting bystanders and encourage others to employ their mindset.

I am having a hard time beleiving that this (METRO)will ever run.

If it does get up and running it will be palgued with the following.

1) lack of fuel to run the generators.
2) Lack of maintenance.
3) lack of spare parts to keep it running.

I will be quiet on the personnel because I beleive that Dominicans are good workers but the work ethincs for maintenance will be lacking.

One major problem will be like in New York where everybody tries to cram in at the same time however 100 times worse.

Some very good points here.

After this let's get to the real problems of education and electricity. And seeing how we maintained the Mercedes buses, you have to worry about proper maintenance and the lack of spare parts. I hope that for once we get mechanics who know how to fix things properly, not just make them work again. There is a difference.

juanb, you post that after the metro , we should focus on education and electricity. i respectfully beg to differ. i think we should focus on electricity BEFORE the metro. without addressing electricity, the metro becomes a moot issue!

Lets hope they maintain not only the equipment but the surrounding areas and guarantee the passengers safety during hours of operations if they dont it will fail due to fear of riding or just unsanitary conditions

Don't surprise me the least that their is always money for things less important...
I guess Education, new power plants, helping & feeding the poor are not on the list of importance.

Straw Berri, you said a mouthful. but then again, you cannot brag about education; its boring. but tell your neighbours that you have a subway..well, that is a different thing, is it not?

yes, they will love it until the electricity goes off and they are stranded under ground for 3 hours. then, its back to the carritos for at least some of them.

Hey, do you really prefer a stinky "concho" over a subway system? You can triple investment in education and still not improve its quality, which is the real problem. More schools (there's our "investment" in education) does not mean better education. It's not as simple as just pouring lots of money into it. The electricity problem is also not as simple as you may think. As long as a great % of users don't actually PAY for electricity, energy companies can't make a profit without subsidies, as long as the government keeps subsidizing energy theft, and as long as the government is involved in the energy sector the problem won't be fixed.

hey, Trujillo, last time i checked, the purpose of the metro was to reduce the number of vehicles, including conchos, on the public thoroughfares. ergo, if the plan succeeds, all the people who make for "stinky" conchos (your characterisation), will be boarding the metro. it is pretty safe to assume that they will not modify their traits of personal hygiene simply to ride a train. logic then persuades us that the metro will be equally "stinky". even moreso, perhaps, in the likely event that it gets stuck underground for 3 hours because of the customary, and obligatory , apagones. with no AC, the ethers below should be quite hair-raising. i will take my chance with the above ground version of a moving microwave. at least i can importune the intrepid chauffeur to stop and permit me to effect my exit.
