Theft, lack of billing, high fuel costs are just a small part of a rosary of woes.
SANTO DOMINGO. - The Herrera Industrial Companies Association (AEIH) said the country’s electrical sector is in a process of extreme calamity and warned of a collapse with unforeseeable economic and social consequences due to the power plant’s financial deterioration, blackouts and the absence of new investments.
Adding to that panorama - which the AEIH defines as pathetic- is this year’s projected financial deficit of 1.3 billion dollars, situation that takes the subsidies to their limit. It also notes that the distributors bill only 54 of every 100 GWH they obtain from the power plants.
AEIH Electrical Commission coordinator Ernesto Vilalta said at present “the electrical sector seems to have entered a dead end street and far from considering a rational solution to the tragedy, the problem acquires an increasingly greater magnitude.”
He said that resulting from the electrical industry’s financial crisis, there are power companies which aim to leave market segments toward those which guarantee a return for their investment. “It’s a patient in extreme critical condition.”
Vilalta said an involution process persists with the electrical companies and a State Electrical Companies Corporation as the regulator which, instead of disappearing, carries a strong financial burden with its more than 1,400 employees.
“The economy has grown but not the electrical supply. For the next three years there are no signals of new facilities to increase the energy supply.”

Can it really be that difficult to set up an electrical system that functions properly? Can it be that difficult to provide a service and collect for providing it? How can the rest of the world do it and we can't?
While watching the Olympics last week I saw a report on life in the poorer barrios. The thing that struck, me as they walked along the streets and connecting underpasses, was that everywhere they went you could see electric meters. There were no illegal lines connected on the streets to power lines. It dawned on me that in China, which is certainly not a wealthy country, nor someplace I would ever like to live, they have the will to take control of the situation. Now granted, they take too much control of too many situations, but the point is that they have THE WILL to do so and WE DON'T.

Here's the question we should all ask Leonel:
How is it possible that in all the time you have been in office you have been unable to resolve the electrical service problem?
Nothing else.

The people of Dominican Republic will not pay a bill for three hours of daily service. The Dominican People should bill the electric company for putting up with them flipping the light on and off all *** day and night long. Any Business person would be a FOOL to make investments where the basic infrastructure is non functional.
Take La Caleta where every dam day the light are ON For a Few hours during the Day and OFF during the NIGHT when it is needed. This President is a Motor mouth with no Substance and has shown buy his deeds that he is Not up to the task. So now the Fool is back in office again, flapping his lawyer lips and defusing the revelution to come with copious holidays, cheap rum plenty of booty shaking parties to keep the poor in NEO SLAVERY..
My question is, When are Dominicans going to wake up and know they are slaves. I suggest that all Dominican refuse to pay electric bills for 60 days, I can assure you this

The private sector, the lying and stealing bourgeoisie, wants an extreme increase in the rates the customers in the DR pay for electricity and also wants to cut back in quantity and quality on the already deficient services and product the private sector provides to the DR customers.
The DR regime opposes the rate hike and a cut back in service and product.
Private sector is not going to back down. So, somebody has to go -- either the regime or the private sector.

I pose the question to Belial,
We both live in Houston
We both use electricity
we both pay our bill
we have no blackouts
we pay a private company
If it works here with a private company, why does it not work there?
From: United States, Richmond, Texas
The DR is like most other LA countries, a vast number do not pay for electricity and they are the ones who complain the most when it goes out. Ask most of them and they will tell you, "I will not pay for the service until it is better" How can it be better if the people do not pay so they can have money for maintenance of the system?

I previously saw you seem to have some technical knowledge about energy, but I never saw anything in you that suggested a sly, cunning, clever, crafty head on your shoulders ... or, more precisely, on your neck.
The above-quoted comments of yours are a nice little trap you've set for me.
Well, I'm glad I set you up with the Shell Oil Company trap last week. You walked right into the trap with your eyes wide opened.
How did it feel?
I gotcha you then.
And I concede you gotcha me, now, with an empty and pointless academic trick.

There was a time in the Dominican Republic when we didn't have blackouts. There wasn't electricity everywhere yet, and I'm sure still isn't, but those places that had it had it for 24 hours every day. Yes, it was under a dictatorship, but it worked.
