Santo Domingo.- The Government today announced efforts to ease the energy crunch that has resulted in protests in several areas of the country, and the criticism of busniess and even the church.

State power companies (CDEEE) vice president Radhames Segura said the government negotiates the purchase of four barges in the Philippines and two others in Florida that would inject more than 260 megawatts to the electrical system.

He said the rebuilt power plant Puerto Plata II, which generates about 30 additional megawatts, went back on line Friday to help ease the supply shortage in the Cibao region (north), blamed on a drought in the zone, and aggravated by the shutdown of Puerto Plata’s San Felipe plant.

Segura said two other 138 megawatt power lines will be added to the system shortly, in addition to the 50 megawatts that the mine Falconbridge Dominicana contributes.

The official also described the Herrera industrialists as “hypersensitive,” for a recent complaint against the electricity supply, since they are fed 85 percent of the required energy, with a 3.5 megawatt “privileged circuit,” with interruptions averaging only 2.3 hours per day.

Whereas Electricity superintendent Francisco Méndez said the electric bill won’t increased in September, although the world price of fuel oil jumped from 93 to 106 dollars per barrel this month. “We are doing everything possible to keep the bill in September at the same level of price stability which it has had this August, with the government’s injection of 250 million dollars for the electrical subsidy.”

Isn't this the same idiot that 3 weeks ago claimed there were no problems. Is anyone else stupid enough to believe this guy? He actually thinks it great that the blackouts to the manufacturing sector are ONLY 2.3 hours. What a dope. Leonel: Fire this fool and put someone in place who can do the job. Or is there no one in the world who can solve this problem.

The DR will never solve the problem of shortages and outages as long as the private sector, the lying and stealing bourgeoisie, is involved in the electricity industry.

only 2.3 hours per day? is this guy on drugs? no business in the USA or europe would consider operating with 2.3 hours of outage. in the world of today, productivity is measure in fractions. it is measured in minutes, not hours. it is this devil may care approach to business which is going to cost us the opportunities to be selected as a favorable location to do business.

this guy is nuts first the govt produces no electricity except hydroelectricity. the fuel oil is bought by the power providers who get 6 cents US per /kwh. if you have looked at your bill lately on the assumption your paying and not stealing you will see that you pay 27 cents US to the distributor edenorte/edesur, which are govt owned. something wrong here!!!!!

Gee do you think this may be one of the reasons there are blackouts..?

www.dr1.com

7. Many don't get power bills
About 35% of electricity consumers do not get billed by the Electricity Distributors (Edes), according to a study released by the Dominican Corporation of State-owned Electricity Companies CDEEE). The study shows that the losses in the areas do not belong to the Program for the Reduction of Blackouts (PRA), which reached 47.17%, about 7% more than in January, when losses were said to be 37%. This means that the EDEs' financial losses increased by 20% in the first five months of the year. In March, two months before the elections, the sector began to show the first signs of deterioration.

pontius, i see that you have joined the long, grey line of manhood which advocates nuclear power for the DR. forget it! think of what would happen if there was an accident. do you realistically believe that the DR has sufficient capacity to respond?

I have been here over 4 years. I have never received a bill. I always have to go to the office and ask. Right now we are getting (near Cabarete) just 3 or 4 hours per day. Yesterday we had a blackout for 12 hours. They say Puerto Plata is back on. Eden Norte tell me it will be another week at least. What a way to run a business.

Ducado, get used to business as usual. every president claims he is going to have the problem resolved, but it only gets worse.this country probably has more standby generating equipment than normal generators.

Very soon, all of this news about energy needs in the world will be OVER! Scientist known to me are working on an "all magnetic apparatus" to produce energy at a very cheap price. It will cost less than 4cents per kw.

Generally speaking a mothballed nuclear ship gets mothballed when the fuel rods are used up and it is considered not cost effective to refuel the ship. Generally speaking it is in the area of Billon dollars. Also the ship is designed for propulsion and does not have a great deal of Electrical generation out side its normal needs.

jonbonz in theory this may work however is there a place where they have put this into practice? or is this from the desk of the mad scientist

Like I said the nukes are designed for propulsion not power generation. Also there are the real terrorist threats because the nuke ship would have to be berthed at a port. The cost of refueling the ship would be over whelming. Plus you would have to have a crew to leave port on stand by in case on bad weather. Now in the mean time just because the vessel is mothballed does not mean it is obsolete. So another words you would have a nuclear powered US navy vessel needing a crew of around 150 on standby just have minimal manning and of course the maintenance on all the equipment unrelated to power production All for maybe 2 or 3 MW So that means the people manning the plant would have to be cleared at least secret or better by the US military.
My previous comment was meant to dissuade the idea not endorse it.
