Santo Domingo.- Public Works minister Victor Diaz Rúa said Tuesday the start of construction of the mega-ports announced by president Leonel Fernandez are among its priorities.

He said a team from Public Works and from the State Works Supervisory Office (OSOE) elaborates a work cronogram  with the projects’ budget estimates.

Interviewed in the television program Hoy Mismo, Diaz said the megaports’ construction will be with foreign investment, for which contacts have begun to study international funding.

The the megaports would be built in Manzanillo (northwest), and San Pedro and Caucedo  (southeast). The latter already has an environmental impact study, and has sparked opposition from residents of Boca Chica and several environmental groups.

The projects, expected to create thousands of jobs, could cost as much as US$1.8 billion (RD$68.6 billion), and more than 75 percent of that corresponds to the Manzanillo, Montecristi megaports.

Lawsuit against CODACSA

Regarding the legal conflicdt with the road contractor CODACSA, Diaz said the Government will file a lawsuit in the country’s courts, for allegedly fraud and breach the contract, in the construction of the Eastern Motorway.  He said he’ll continue firm in the decision to take CODACSA to justice, despite that the U.S.-Spanish capital company began an international arbitration process.

Jim,

My point exactly. They want to build not one, but THREE maga-ports and they can't even get the metro up and running.

texasshoe,

You know that this is so sad when you watch with complete impotence this level of disregard for the Dominican citizens present and future well being.

It isn't that we don't have a level of corruption here in the US it is however benign compared to the cancer in the leonel Government.

Several years ago, Dubai Industries presented a plan to build a Megaport at Manzanillo. That deal fell through because the government couldn't get enough of a "kickbacki" from Dubai Industries. The company ended up buying the port just up from Boca Chica ( I have forgotten the name at this point) and the Manzanillo "project" was put on the back burner.
I don't know what it is about the governments of the DR turning down huge investments of this type that will open tremendous opportunity for area employment and business opportunities for Dominicans and foreigners alike.
This "foot-dragging" absolutely MUST stop and the GREED of Government Officials MUST be severely abated.
I am wondering just how long it will take these "Projects" to come to fruition?
The Coal Plants at Manzanillo and Azua have taked 3 years, so far, from the original announcements. How much lionger for them to "break ground "and start building?
WHEN HELL FREEZES OVER?????

TB,
I couldn't say it any better.
But remember it was a legally elected government by the people.

Funding(Private or Public) is beside the point, the bottom line is that the country need to invest in modern docking infrastructures for some of the huge cruise ship that cannot dock because of the poor or nonexistences facilities, lets remember that our short/mid term job generating industry is tourism.

Good to know that they are still thinking about the megaports. I believe these will be private investments, like the Causedo. Also, please stop saying that the Metro failed when it hasn't even started. November 2008 is the date it is supposed to open. What's the problem with some "dominicans", it seems as they don't want our country to progress. Is it about politics? National interests first, political party interests LAST.

TB;
You are absolutley right with the above staments but left out inter-links by rail among all 3 megaports to carry the containers such as we see in the USA.The product has to be moved among the ports, can't stay in ports.Manzanillo and Caucedo would have to be linked by diesel
trains as well as built good concrete-ties & wide gage railing to hold the load to be maintanance free from wood -ties that rots with time.
Over all the idea of the megaport is ideal if it ever gets off the ground and don't have to be strictly
gvt. investment .
I believe we had a discussion a few months ago about the railroads in DR and we agreed the best way to go was diesel engine because of its hauling capability as well as auto- dependance,
(no need for electric lines to feed it.)
