SANTIAGO, Chile. – “Latin America continues growing despite the deterioration of the international economic context,” said Cepal, the United Nation’s regional economic organization today, which also expects  5.5 percent growth for the Dominican Republic.

Latin America’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) will expand 4.7 this year, the entity said in its "Economic study of Latin America and the Caribbean 2007-2008."

Although the organization’s figure is one point less than the region’s 5.7 percent growth in 2007, Cepal executive secretary Alicia Bárcena, upon presenting the report, said in 2008 Latin America and the Caribbean will have reached five years of sustained GDP increase per inhabitant in a rate of more than 3 percent, a similar economic period found only as far back as 40 years ago.

The Cepal report projects a 4 percent growth for next year, mainly to the prolonged phenomena which have affected the region this year, such as the accelerated inflation, which has spurred interest rate jumps that also impact the GDP.

Peru will lead this year’s growth at 8.3 percent, Cepal said on its Web site, followed by Panama (8.0), Uruguay (7.5), Argentina (7.0), Cuba (7.0) and Venezuela (6.0).

Dominican Republic follows with 5.5 percent, Colombia (5.3), Paraguay (5.0), Brazil (4.8). Bolivia (4.7), Honduras (4.5), Costa Rica and Guatemala (4.3), Chile (4.2), El Salvador (3.7), Ecuador (3.0), Haiti and Nicaragua (3.0), with Mexico trailing a 2.5 percent.

UN regional economic commissions, like Cepal, use a methodology based on the discredited theories of economic growth {GDP} elaborated by Simon Kuznets, the famous bourgeois economist.

Kuznets says GDP is value added determined by market value and, in a case where the value added isn't determined by the market value, then it is determined by cost of production.

Say, an eye operation in Peru is billed for $15,000, but in Venezuela it done for free at a cost of $1000 in both Peru and Venezuela.

CEPAL recogmises $14,000 in value added or economic growth in Peru and similar capitalist capitalist countries in the region, but only recognizes $1000 in value added or economic growth in Venezuela, because a government subsidy, not the capitalist market, determined the price [zero] that the consumer paid for the service.

Bourgeois economics tells lies and enlarges bourgeois economic performance and it also tell lies but belittles proletarian performance.

The economy can grow 700% but if labourers are not capable of negotiating good working conditions with the employers, only the rich few will benefit from the economic growth. Inequalities will remain as long as the workers don't stand up and negotiate for better working conditions (wages, etc). The doctors are showing the way a sector can fight for its interest, but other sectors should do the same. The labour unions are the only ones who will fight for the rights of the labourers, not the government. Dominicans have waited for their government to improve their conditions for a long time now, but the only way of getting what they want is from negotiating collectively with employers. The government can only act as middle man in between to help them reach a consensus.

GC, i want to make your day, so i will weigh in on this " growth " nonsense. the indicator which is always used is growth in GDP. GDP only expresses the amount of money spent within the economy within a prescribed period of time. it does not express what it is spent on, or how it is spent. which means that the GDP can expand by any number of percentage points you prefer, but the conditions do not change. let us take the new bridge which Leonel inaugurated on april 17. it cost 100 million pesos to erect. but, a scant 5 months later, it is falling down. yet, that 100 million is not subtracted from the GDP, and the expenditure took place during the accounting period. a further expenditure of , say, 30 million, to shore it up, further adds to the GDP, but, is the economy really better off because of this boondoggle?

Be fair, share. Dread is one of our valued contributors. You don' t want to be thought of as a "come solo" kind of guy, do you?
On the other hand if you refused to share with Belial that would be viewed as intelligent management of resources.

Can anyone help me with this math?

RD GNP Growth 5.5%
Less: RD Annual Inflation (12.0)%

Equals Real Growth -6.5%

What does all this mean is exordinary inflation as merchants reap benefits from DR-CAFTA but price gouge and refuse to pass on savings to the Dominican society. The average Dominican family gets screwed and is worse off this year than before!

While politicans, military, police & DNCD practice back-scratching, move drugs and profit at the rest of societies expense.
