SANTO DOMINGO. – Just one week after Colombia revealed a reluctance to materialize a gas pipeline to expand the propane gas supply to Dominican Republic, Venezuela’s government yesterday proposed the construction of that project that would also supply Haiti.
Aníbal Rosa, president of the Petrocaribe oil deal, said the pipeline would reach important zones of the country to spur its internal development, and even the neighboring country.
Rosa, speaking in a meeting of the Petrocaribe Coordinating and Focal Points Committee, said technicians from 14 countries discuss how to supply the fuel to the Caribbean islands and Central America.
When asked about the fees that will prevail, Rosa said for that type of economic agreements, “it’s necessary to establish the general and particular framework to specify values,” though clarified they would be below the international market.
“The president Hugo Chavez intention is solidarity with our nations,” the official said, and specified that until recently gas cost 15 dollars per 1 million BTU.
He said it would be beneficial as a fuel, for industry and power plants.
In the activity, with the participation of Hacienda minister Vicente Bengóa that will conclude today in the hotel V Centenario.

I am a lifelong Democrat and I agree with everything that Dread said, except for the criticism of the comparison to the Nuremburg Rally. As I read the original reference I thought that that was a particularly insightful analogy. As a firm Hillary supporter, who believes that Obama is mostly fluff, mentioning the rally only reinforces my impression of Obama which is that he is all show and little substance: Having said that, let me also say how important it is for the entire world that McCain is defeated. No place on earth can survive four more years of the same failed policies.

The deepest pipeline ever planned was for 8300 ft. of water, the edge of the mona pass is 7800 ft. and the deepest part between Venezuela and DR is 9000 feet. This would be quite an engineering marvel if Chavez could pull it off. Venezuela owns no deepwater construction equipment that I know of but it would also be a very long pipeline about 670 miles. A VERY long pipeline for underwater. The pressure on the pipeline at 9000 feet would be about 4000 pound per square inch. Don't know, sounds like another ALBA deal to me, all talk and no do.

Obama is a great orator. You cant take that away from him but his government experience is something like 173 days and his questionable religious beliefs leaves a lot to be desired. I have to question the CHANGE part of his platform which he hasn't really said much other than growing the government.
At the end of the day I don't think the US is going to be ready for a black President expecially one with no experience and has never had a job other than sucking off the government tit. I never thought he would win on election day when it cam to pulling the lever and now he is losing steam even during the convention which is usually a boost. Americans are catching on. Anyone who thinks Obama is a shoe in ought to reexamine the facts.

"Just one week after Colombia revealed a reluctance to materialize a gas pipeline to expand the propane gas supply to Dominican Republic, Venezuela’s government yesterday proposed the construction of that project that would also supply Haiti, " DT reports today.
0000
But on Aug. 17, the DT reported Colombia planned to supply electricity to DR and PR with a 1,000 kilometers-long underwater cable.
So, dope-dealing and death squad regime in Colombia switched from 1000KM electric extension cord to a IOOOKM gas pipeline sometime during the week.
This similar to US aid that never arrives.
"Venezuela’s government yesterday proposed the construction of that project that would also supply Haiti."
What does "that project" mean?
"That project" probably means some kind of energy link between Cuba and Haiti, but it is not likely to be pipeline. As of 2005, Haiti only consumed about 12,000 barrels of oil daily and no natural gas. Cuba handle that with small boat.
From: United States, Houston
Actually the way to go to supply the amount of gas would be LNG, via ship. Of course Venezuela has no LNG facilities, LNG transport ships, nor does the DR have a LNG storage facility.

typical anthonyc; he reads half the sentence, then makes his pronouncement. i said after a period in which people are worse off. there are governments in the caribbean that have won 5 elections in a row. but not when people keep going down the drain, as we see in the USA. i agree with Escott that america is not ready for a black President, and so McCain has a chance of backing into the election. but, as we all know, three months is an eternity in american political cycles, so all the soothsayers can take a rest till november. and i would like to understand what Escott means by ' QUESTIONABLE RELIGIOUS BELIEFS" all religious beliefs are questionable. it dependes on who is doing the questioning. i already said this several months ago, but many caucasians in america will vote against their own self interests to deny a black man the presidency. and look how much "experience" helped George Bush, easily the worst President in american political history.

"Despite the need for further structural reform, foreign firms continue to invest in the Dominican Republic's power infrastructure. AES Andres, a subsidiary of AES, has invested $400 million to construct an LNG import terminal, a regasification facility, a pipeline and a 300-MW combined cycle power plant, located outside of Santo Domingo. The LNG terminal received its first shipment in February 2003. However, since the 300-MW power plant will not be completed until summer 2003, the imported natural gas has been going to the Los Mina power plant in Santo Domingo, which AES converted from fuel oil to natural gas," the imperialist US regime, on its chief energy site, alleges.

there goes anthonyc again, with his half truths. he would make a fantastic propagandist. he fails to insert the notion of party affiliation. anyone who can find the USA on the globe knows that in recent history, blacks have voted democratic. i guarantee that 94% of blacks would not vote for a black republican. do you realistically believe that JC Watts would get 94 % of black votes if he ran for president? and, try to remember that former mayor of new york, Ed Koch, used to poll in the low 90%s in the black community. i have seen him in person, and he does not remind me much of mike tyson!
From: United States, Houston
You are correct. AES built that facility (not DR) to feed that plant and the los Mina facility the pipeline connects the two. However, just like the refinery, you can not build a pipeline and ship NATGAS or LNG to somewhere if there no place to store it. If the existing power generation facilities are set up for diesel than what is the point. It is one thing to go from NATGAS to Propane but Diesel to NATGAS is a whole different story. However you slice the issue, if the required conversion work is not done concurrently with the pipeline construction or ahead of time they will miss the boat. The other issue is the construction equipment for the pipeline. That type of equipment is specialized and not all offshore pipeline companies have equipment that can lay in that depth. Venezuela is just now starting to develop its' NATGAS capabilities. Until recently any NATGAS was basically burned as refinery by-product.....

I don't like Hugo Chavez, but I think a pipeline from Venezuela to the RD is a great idea. I love it when people think big and the competition (Colombia/Venezuela) to provide us with energy is great. I hope BOTH projects are build and I'm not buying that "solidarity" BS. This is the type of competition I want to see in Latin America.
From: United States, Houston
.....There is a huge project that will be taking place in the near furture called Mariscal-Sucre and it combines both on and offshore facilities. The first wells are being drilled as we discuss this matter. Construction of the LNG facility has yet to begin. The engineering company responsible for both on and offshore construction is French. The estimated commisioning start date is around 48 months from now. There are offshore production facilities to fabricate and install, pipelines to shore and the GTL (Gas To Liquids) facility which result in LNG. This proposed ALBA deal is not happening anytime soon.

Frankly in the next few months I plan to be off the grid and charge my batteries daily using wood gas. I know where I can by a gasifier for less than $600 in China that produces 7 M3 of gas an hour out of straw of wood waste.
I also have the plans that FEMA put out a few years ago to keep farmers working in a gas shortage.
Since I operate most of the time on batteries anyway and many times I need to fire up my generator to make up for the deficit on long black outs. I see no big difference.
