SANTO DOMINGO. - Without the subsidy a 100-pound propane gas (LPG) cylinder will cost more than RD$2,000, or RD$400 more than the current price, and the population will have to accept it since the government announced it will eliminate the subsidy at the end of this month.

The measure also jeopardizes hundreds of drivers who use it in their vehicles.

For two weeks the Industry and Commerce Ministry (SEIC) has been applying increases in the cost of a gallon of gas that has remained frozen for several consecutive weeks.

The increases in the price of LPG, according to analysts, are to “prepare” the population so it doesn’t feel it suddenly.

This week the 100 pound cylinder (22.5 gallons) costs RD$1,663.20; a 50 pound  tank costs RD$831.60, but with the elimination of the subsidy it will cost more than RD$1,000.

Subsidized LPG costs RD$73.92 and non-subsidized sells for RD$95.68 per gallon.

The Government inexplicably applied a lesser subsidy in prices this week, of RD$15.18, instead of RD$17.35.

If for the week next the eliminates the subsidy to the gas, the price  the gallon will register the value  market.

The Government will provide subsidized gas for only the 800,000 families identified in the beneficiary program’s system (Siuben), but limited to a quota of six gallons every month.

Targetted subsidies and benefits are much better than general subsidies. THe people who really need it will get the help. I just hope that there is an accurate and transparent way of identifying the beneficieries.

Other vulnerable populations should also get some help- e.g. the elderly on fixed income below a certain level.

THe point to take away is that a move away from a general subsidy may help reduce G expenses and continue to help the most needy...

Or they convert the METRO to run on LPG!

Imagine Diadino and Lie-onel getting up early everyday to wait on line to fill up those cylinders and then coming back later in the afternoon DRESSED in disguises to get another fillup.

Point one: We don't have the money to pay the gas subsidy. Thank God we still have enough money to pay all the assisant ministers and others who have "no show jobs".

Point two: To eliminate the shortage of gas, I suggest we hook Josean up to a gas tank. No shortage of gas and hot air there. What a one trick pony. And yes, Joesean your PRD pay check is showing.
