SANTO DOMINGO. - The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), in coordination with several local entities, will launch an 18-month project to bolster institutions for Biotechnology and Bio-security Research Capacities.
The Biotechnology and Industry Innovation Institute (IIBI), the Environment Ministry and the Farming and Forestry Development Center (CEDAF) coordinate the initiative, aimed at promote the safe use of biotechnology in farms, as well as to better exploit the country’s natural resources and productive potential.
Andrea Sonnino Robert, the FAO’s senior agricultural research official in Rome and Biotechnology and Bio-security expert will present the project, designed for technicians, teachers and researchers who work in the detection of genetically modified organisms (GMO) and molecular markers, so the country gets the techniques to generate, validate, apply and transfer farming biotechnologies and bio-security management.

For example, we insert a gene into a plant so that it produces a protein that can break down certain pesticides.
How do we know the effects of this protein on humans cells?
How do we know that gene is not producing/controlling other kinds of cell functions as well?
You reminded me that I heard once that Monsanto has a monopoly on natural seeds; They have them stockpiled. Supposedly all crops in the near future will be genetically engineered, so if you don't get the natural seeds now, you'll have to go through Monsanto to ge them in the future.
