Santo Domingo.-  The Santo Domingo Metro’s definitive operation will be at month’s end, said Transport Reform Office (Opret) director Diandino Peña yesterday, who told the head of the bus owners grouped in Fenatrano, Juan Hubieres, to “forget about the subway’s feeder routes.”

Although its operational details will be disclosed in a press conference in Opret next week, he said riders will access the Metro with a reloadable card, which costs 30 pesos, available in the stations where they can also buy the fare of 25 pesos.

The Metro will provide service with 19 trains, which are already operational.

Peña added that an ad campaign will be started to explain to the population how to access the Metro.

How long will it take before the dispensing equipment for the reloadable cards and the card readers develop "mechanical" problems?

I'm so sick of hearing about this Metro fiasco. This project is the biggest “white elephant” infrastructure project in the history of the DR.

To pharaprase old Winston: Never in the course of Dominican History have so many been robbed (at least 8,750,000 plus) to benefit so few.

In most civilized countries this type of boondoggle would be prosecuted!

Hold your noses as you ride the METRO of the most modern city in the Caribbean Santo "Calcutta!"

They can't pick up the dam garbage but they built a METRO that's PLD efficiency at its best. I guess picking up garbage is even more difficult than building schools and solving the energy crisis!

Put on a oxygen mask and read the following:

hey josean only 5 to 7% of the dominican population pays for garbage collection. what do you think that the people who works collecting it don't get pay. i have no problem with garbage or electricity in the area were i live they alway collected and the power is on 24/7 we might get 30 minutes black out from time to time. so if the people wants good services they need to pay for it. why do you think that codetel the telephone company has the mojority of the home line.

College students pose concern

Major deficiencies in students' grammar skills, spelling mistakes, low reading comprehension and other problems are raising concerns among university professors around the country. Teachers are also concerned that lack of concrete ability to develop ideas as well as an inability to reference historical events greatly affects the nation's high school students. "Serbesa" (cerveza), "ospital" (hospital), "esecuarto" (ese cuarto), "habierto", (abierto), "deceo" (deseo), "herror" (error) are just some of the most common spelling mistakes made by college students. Listin Diario quotes a first year Literature professor at a local university who said she was shocked when a student handed her an assignment with the word cerveza misspelled as "serbesa." This is comparable to an English speaker misspelling of "would" as "wood."

The teacher was even more shocked after she spoke to the student who asked, "Teacher, I study accounting, why would I need any grammar skills?" UASD Professor Rafael Peralta Romero says the lack of grammar skills is nothing compared to many students' inability to form even a basic thought. "They don't know how to construct sentences, and have limited awareness of things happening in the country."

Josean, that is by design. The elite wish to keep the masses ignorant and uneducated/under-educated in order to exert their superior control over the people. I too noticed over the past 20 years, while living in the DR and observing the youth throughout the country, a progressively lesser awareness of things/situations happening in the country. Have you noticed the TV programming, song/dance shows and cartoons. Ever sit in a waiting room and noticed elderly/adults/youngsters and children all mesmerized by cartoons on a blaring TV? Now they soon will have a Metro to stare at or ride. They are like children with new bicycles at Christmas.

Oh I am sorry G E your right, this is the brilliant plan of having garbage deposits throughout Santo Calcutta as a "Refuse Reserves" for the the new power plants scheduled to come on line when HELL FREEZES OVER!

I wonder if Saint Jmaes will have Robert Salcedo arrested?

"Today's Garbage is Tomorrow's Electricity"

However we have not defined when that tomorrow will be; I am Lie-onel and I approve of this hoax , Oh I mean this message!

Kitty,

I always knew you were a lady!

I let him post first, because about a year ago he almost had a coronary because I was beating him to the punch. So now most of us amuse him and allow him to post before he puts in his dentures.

This year has been a nightmare for him.

28 years of Reaganomics have come to an unceremonious ending, crashing and burning!

John McLame and Sarah Falin, for whom he had the hots, got wipe-out!

The Cuban Embargo is hanging on by a thread.

So you see I just wish him a long life, because to him it feels like the Death by a Thousand Cuts!
