SANTO DOMINGO.- Nothing has damaged Dominican Republic’s image abroad more than the problems in tourist transport services, specifically the monopoly in the tourist regions and hotels in the cities.
“As proof of this, I as a Puerto Platan, I can tell you that if the cruises left Puerto Plata was because to a large extent, of the transport crisis,” said National Hotels and Restaurants Association (Asonahores) executive vice president Arturo Villanueva.
The country’s tourism regions have had transport monopolies for decades, where sometimes even buses full of travelers have been vandalized by drivers who affirm that tourists must use those belonging to its union members registered in each zone.
They’ve also boosted the fares excessively, Villanueva said, and blamed that situation as one of the main reasons Puerto Plata lost its tourism splendor.
He said in the 1990s, during the height of the tourism activity’s development, it was one of the main causes the cruise ships left Puerto Plata’s port. “The tourism sector has already more than enough examples of the effects of the disorder of these transporters.”

Co-operatives and monopolies are good for business, their members livelihoods, and maintainance of standars standards. But when politicians and others constantly threaten them they naturally react badly and their reasonable members loose out to hotheads.
