SANTO DOMINGO.- All-terrain or SUVs continue leading the new vehicle sales market, followed by autos from model year 2002, said the Vehicles Concessionaires and Manufacturers Association (Acave).

But due to the world economic crisis and high interest rates 3,007 less yipetas (word feminized from Jeep) were sold in 2008 than in the 2007, falling from 11,240 to 8,233. Last year 21,887 total vehicles were sold, or around 8,749 less than the previous year.

Last year’s fall in new vehicles sales was only steeper in 2003, with 12,941, and in 2004, when 11,925 were sold.

After yipetas cars continue to lead sales, with 38,802 new units sold from 2002 to date, followed by light trucks with 31,311 and trucks with 24,231.

Buses are the least sold new vehicles, with only 394 in that period as well as 1,572 minibuses and 3,783 vans.

Since 2002 the authorized dealers have sold 159,153 vehicles, with the highest sales posted in 2007, of 30,636 units.

The big reasons for SUV's is several:
1. Better security and forward vision against crazy drivers as you sit higher.
2. More diversity for trips to the "campo" being all terrain.
3. Better safety and diversity in case of rains and flooding.
4. Prestige factor

If we had better sewage systems that do not flood the streets whenever a little rain storm pours some water, and we had better security mostly in the evening and in highways then we will all have small cars like in Europe.
Meanwhile SUV's are the safest choice even though the gas consumption is high.

I have a new SUV only 4 months old. All 4 tires have bubble in them from these terrible roads. ONLY driving the main North Coast Road and NOT in the campo where you would expect this.

I should and would have replaced all these tires in another country but NOT HERE. The new ones will get Screwed up just as fast because of the terrible roads and total lack of maintenence.

Driving from Sabineta to Nagua is like running the gauntlet with your car. No way to get through unharmed.

Sales are down because we now have a METRO and people will no longer need SUVs or Cars!

El METRO resuelve todo!

Try the new Brigestone Dueler H/T Alenza , they are soft ridding and take a lot of punishment.
I have them on my SUV and swear by them.

SUVs are the preferred tool of your average wanker. However from all the places I've been they are possibly needed more in DR than anywhere else, the roads even around Santo Domingo are a disgrace. I'd fix the roads - so there was no excuse - then place an outright ban on these things.

Get a brain. In two (2) years gasoline will be $5 a gallon in the US.

You would have to be a drug dealer to own one of these.

Off Road vehicles are the best because of so many ugly streets in the DR. I the barrio, they place many bumps on the roads and those bumps are too high for small cars.

You are not known for your large brain mister, according to most of your ignorant posts.
Mr. mental giant my Jap SUV gets 23 miles per gallon and most people have propane gas systems in their SUV's getting still better mileage.
Or they drive diesels.
Some of us that do work do need the storage capacity for our business.
