SANTO DOMINGO.- After almost one year of test runs, free runs and press runs, president Leonel Fernandez is scheduled to head the official inaugural of the Santo Domingo Metro tomorrow Thursday, with the Centro de los Heroes (La Feria) station chosen as the site to cut the ribbon.
Workers were busy making the final adjustments for the lighting and audio in a stage built for the inaugural, between the National Lottery building and the La Feria station.
Starting tomorrow riders can board in one of 16 stations along the system’s 14 kilometers for 20 pesos one way, with a planned connection with buses in feeder routes for the same fare.

30,000 blind people
A recent national survey of blind people has found that 30,000 blind people live in the DR, of whom 47.5% lost their sight due to cataracts. Doctor Juan Batlle and Cristina Nogueira of the National Commission for the Prevention of Blindness and the Pan American Health Organization, respectively, emphasized that this type of blindness is preventable. They announced a national campaign to make people aware of steps that can be taken to prevent cataracts. Of that 47.5%, all are over 51 years of age. The PHO says the DR should be performing at least 3,000 cataract operations a year, and not the present 900. She says the DR has the capacity to address this issue. The main causes of blindness are cataracts, refractory errors, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy.

hey josean why do you hate this country so much. why don't you come out with one good suggestion on how to solve the transportation problem that this country has had for such of long time. one thing at a time go and tell those people from villa mella that has to be at work at 8am and has to be up around 5.30am in order to make it to work on time. well now they would be able to sleep another hour or an hour and half more in the morning. and same thing going back to their homes.

You must be Dominican, I wake up @ 05:30 every morning during the week so I can be @ work between 7:15 and 7:30, and I do this so I can be ready and productive for the day. Are you one of those people that gets in @ 8:01, goes to the cafeteria to get a coffee, then starts reading emails, does not gets going until about 09:00 and when 4:30 comes you are out the door within a minute?
I know transportation is an issue in the DR, but saying this is needed because people want to sleep another hour is wrong. There are other things that could have been done with this money, hence stabilize the electrical issues perhaps?
PS: I was born and raised in the DR.

Just because the government build the first line of the Santo Domingo subway with money lended by Brazil, doesn't mean that every other priority has been put aside. There are 6 lines planned for this subway, the first was build by the state with brazilian money, the other 5 lines will be build by the private sector. The construction of the second line will start this year (2009), expect to hear some news about the second line tomorrow, not saying that the president will say anything about the second line, but it is very possible.

trujillo seems to be posting from jupiter or saturn. the other 5 lines will be built by the private sector, he allows. well, that is great news. there is a private sector somewhere which is going to invest in a venture which is bound to lose money. trujillo, there is only one subway system known to man, which is operating in the black, and that is singapore. oh, i forgot. with the legendary efficiencies we enjoy here, we will be the second.

What is it that makes my people so gullible to any illogical BS rhetoric, like the METRO will produce revenue or the private sector will run it for profit.

you mean like trujillo, who believes that private sector is going to build 5 lines that lose 25 million per year , each. maybe his type of investor, but none that i know of.

Hey dread, I'm not making this up buddy. Have you EVER hear of concessions? Have you ever heard of the Seoul subway? Next time before talking , do some research. There are several companies interested in building the second line of the Santo Domingo subway, also the cargo and passenger train from Haina to Santiago.

explain some of these "concessions" to me, trujillo, since i am talking out of my ass, as you say. explain what kind of concessions will offset a 25 million dollar loss, multiplied by 5? a government guarantee to subsidise? what happens when the guys build the line , and the government reneges on the deal? what next? take them before the world court for arbitration? and what if the private owners win the round in court? how do they collect? the government can simply pass a by-law that permits them to take out only 1 million dollars per year. so, it will take them 125 years to collect in full. do you know what 125 million dollars today is worth in 125 years? ever heard of the "time value of money"? before you go shooting off at the mouth, and telling people that they are talking out of their asses, go get some background, so as not to look foolish.

trujillo, if only you would take the time to respond to what i post, maybe we could get somewhere. i am still awaiting your response regarding these "concessions". if you are going to register disagreement with what i say, it is unbecoming to merely say that i am talking out my ass. show me where i am wrong. i am a grown man, and i can take heat quite well. besides, i like to learn. so, teach me. explain what will attract investors to spend a billion plus dollars on a venture which is destined to operate at a loss. explain why someone would risk that kind of money in a clientelistic political system such as we have here, one in which the government has territories of support. what happens when the PRD, a rural based party, becomes the government, and tells metro, an urban project, to take a hike? you think investors are not studying political tendencies as part of their determination mix?
