SANTO DOMINGO.- Young Industrialists Association (Anje) president Ricardo Bonetti today said the must penalize law electricity theft, because the measure would significantly invigorate the sector.

He said it would be impossible for the country to reach the competitiveness levels with international markets, because energy costs twice as much as in other nations. “We must make the electrical sector a competitive sector, this puts us at a disadvantage with the international competition, that as well as our fiscal and tax measures are those which we very clearly must have.”

Interviewed in the Digital 15 program, the entrepreneur proposed measures to prevent losses in the distribution systems, because of thefts, political clientelism. He said there must be a search for alternative cheaper energies, such as hydroelectric and coal.

As to the summit president Leonel Fernandez proposed, Bonetti said he believes in the encounter’s sincerity, noting that in other countries similar events have been positive.

He said some of the topics that must be included in the debate are investment in education, the energy crisis, the public debt and government corruption. “The creation of a national long term development plan that protects the country in future difficulties must also be discussed.”

Finally, someone gets it. If the theft of electricty could be brought under control the generation of electricity would have some sort of peak and demand cycle to follow allowing the better usage of generation capacity.

Culture of payment needs to be developed, w/ the appropriate help to the poor. Again need to move forward, but with a normative principles of protecting Human Rights & the Environment. If it were up to the industrialist, they would chop down every tree as long as they can make a profit. That's wh we need these normative principles.

For the past 20 years all we have heard is that the theft of electrical service must be punished and that is all we will hear for the next 20 years. Meanwhile the theft of electrical service will continue as usual. Wanna bet?Until there is political will to solve the problem it will continue.

Wait a minute...........I have the answer. Give 50% of the monies collected from the people now stealing their power to the power companies ( so that Radhammes Segura can keep his inflated, completely wasted salary) and split the other 50% with all of the politicians of the PRD, PLD, etc.

Once these crooks realize that there is something in it for them, watch those revenues soar.

All,

This is a fascinating and most interesting site. It is the only place where the reader comments are actually more interesting than the news.

I am an absent Dominican who left as a young child and has not visited in >25 years. My parents were well-connected socially and politically [I've met at least two presidents and several high-ranking officials either in my house or my father's office]. One thing I miss dearly is the usual politically intellectual discussions that took place between my father and his friends, which most Dominicans clearly enjoy; I was hoping that this forum would provide an opportunity to partake in such discussions-civilly!

GC,

You seem to lead a very interesting life.....I would surmise that you are either independently wealthy or a pilot. How in heck do you get to perpetually travel to all of those interesting places? I think we are all envious of you-even Josean!

Josean,

I especially enjoy your sustained bantering with GC. Please

GC,
Thanks for your hospitality.

By the way, I share your interest for value wine [just drank a bottle of 2005 "Montes Alpha" merlot-GREAT BUY!]. What do you think of possibility of starting a winery in DR? I was thinking Constanza due to beneficial climate.

Glomar Good morning..on the subject of wine you said ." By the way, I share your interest for value wine [just drank a bottle of 2005 "Montes Alpha" merlot-GREAT BUY!]. What do you think of possibility of starting a winery in DR? I was thinking Constanza due to beneficial climate.".if you saw the movie "Sideways "and remember the wine geeks reaction to the chick who drank merlot wines .... After the movie was a success the bottom fell out of the merlot market because it is true it is a wishy washy varietal that became very popular mass market plonk like "white zinfandel" which is marketing for Rose wine and wine professionals really felt that way inside about merlot .Glomar if you were very very wealthy and had a huge ego then growing wine grapes hoping for high quality in the higher altitudes is for you...your wines would become a curiosity and possibly after many years you would stop losing money.there is a very famous vineyard in the Beka Valley in Lebanon that commands high prices

Glomar in the Beka an area famous for hashish and gunfire is Chateau Musar its wines are very good and command high prices 50 US for current vintages and hundreds of dollars for older vintages these wines are good but are what I call curiosities like josean...so at 3000 Ft you can grow grapes however why spend the money with very little chance of much return on your investment...I have not tried the wine you referred to as I no longer drink wine at other peoples expense being out of the wine trade for some time I now have to pay for it...and here in the DR wine is very expensive...when I travel and visit old friends in the business in their cellars I go for the throat so to speak...the various addresses I use when posting are places I have lived or spent considerable time at...josean I hear is wine drinker himself he likes thing that are mostly aged in the delivery trucks and consumed with little fanfare from a brown paper bag

Thats easy he replied Wine Women and Song...well if you had to give one of those up which would it be ? Thats an easy one also he said I would give up Song....Aha now we are down to Wine and Women if you had to choose which one of those the Wine or the Women which would you give up ?...."Very very difficult question he said and would depend on the vintage "

Glomar I see you are in the Finger Lakes does Bully Hill still have the wacky labels they were way ahead of their time ? I also used to import some of Herman "the German " Weimers late harvest Riesling they were some of the best American Rieslings I had tasted...you live in a beautiful area ....My green card was validated at Rouses Point NY

Finger Lakes region is one of most beautiful on earth, and I have been privileged to have traveled to many parts of the globe. Bully Hill still has plurality of artsy labels, but I consider their offerings sub-par. It is, however, the most fun winery to tour, particularly the fall. Herman Weimer's winery is very much alive. I was there a month ago. Their Rieslings are competitive but not necessarily the best. Anthony Road Winery has the best Riesling now. Overall, this region is giving Germany a strong challenge on this variety. By the way, did you deal with Brigitte in your past dealings with HW? She is a friend and she now manages G

Glomar I would suspect you are speaking with your heart when you say the Rieslings from anywhere compare with the best of Gremany .Having attended a German wine school in Mainz they are incomparable although many years ago I was impressed with Hermans ability to get good acid out of finger lakes Riesling something the stuff from California could not do ...I also think that north American Eiswien is a bunch of bull and a gimmick....my last contacts with Herman he was heavily involved in selling grafted vines and less on wine

I am sure Walter Taylor is long gone he gave new meaning to the word unusual...I do not recall ever speaking to a Brigitte my contacts with Herman were mostly at wine shows...In total I purchased less than 50 cases 12/375 of his late harvest stuff over a period of 5 or 6 years in the 80s and 90s the wines were a curiosity in my portfolio that I would sell to down island hotels to win Awards in Wine Speculator the magazine of shyster Shanken
