Santo Domingo.- The executive vice president of the of State-owned power companies announced the ribbon cutting for a 60 megawatt power plant in the town Pimentel, Duarte province (north), in a ceremony headed by president Leonel Fernandez today.
Celso Marranzini said there’ll also be a groundbreaking ceremony to start the work of another power plant in the region El Cibao, expected to start operation in March, 2010.
The executives of the company Electricidad de Santiago (Laesa), which owns the power plant located in La Gina, on the Pimentel-Nagua higway, announced that they’ve already tested the unit’s equipment in Italy.

Let me guess: This power plant will run on imported fuel, right? What's the point of building new power plants if
a) We don't have the money to pay its fuel
b) We won't be able to pay the power distribting companies
c) 47% of the power produced is lost at the transmission level
d) It will not alliviate the never-ending 'apagones'

Not if the heat is cooking you alive because you can't get an abanico or AC running.

We need to go solar lord knows we have all we need of that, in my barrio there are some people already installing solar panels the problem is that ladrones steal them and they dont even know what they are used for.
GE has floating wind turbines that can be used offshore we don't have to load up the bay with them.
Point is though that affordable energy means no foreign aid and outlandish botellas for politicians.
As a matter of fact we should be a model nation for renewable energy, i'm sure we could of solved the problem if we invested the metro money into new fuel sources but that would mean no one could skim off the top of the subsidy money. I think the solar panels that were stolen from the UASD research facility was just to sabotage the research in hopes that people in the energy sector can keep on stealing, what the heck would a janitor do with 3 million dollars worth of solar panels anyway?
I don't think any pawnshop would touch that, but hey its DR you never know.

Here is another honor LIE-onel Fernandez has gotten for DR, I wonder if there will be a celebartion for this:
Drugs: the ongoing battle
A dubious honor, but there it is. The DR ranks first amongst all nations as a drugs trans-shipment point, with 11% of all drugs that go to Europe or Latin America passing through the DR. The DR is followed on the list by Argentina and Brazil. The information was revealed in a report from the Office Of Drugs and Crimes in Central America and the Caribbean. The report says that of the 15% of cocaine seized world wide, 97% was found in Central America and 7% was seized in the Caribbean. Of this total, 104 metric tons, 3.85 tons were seized in the DR.

Between January and September 2009 2,305.6 kilos have been seized ion the DR, 13.3 kilos of crack, 735.1 kilos of marijuana, 409.2 kilos of amphetamines, 5 kilos of opium, 99.5 kilos of heroin and 1,965 ecstasy pills. Mabel Feliz, president of the DR's National Drug Council (CND), disclosed this information during the 19th meeting of Latin American and Caribbean Anti-Drug Officials (HONLEA) held on Venezuela's Margarita Island.

You should be aware that Laesa, Ltd. is one of the leading renewable research facility's in this hemisphere. The new engines that are being installed have the ability to run with Natural gas and Hydrogen developed at Laesa. In addition, Laesa has already contracted to install a solar system to provide energy for all "in house" power used, thereby providing more power to the national grid.

In addition, in 2011, Laesa's Phase four (4) will take the heat energy from all of these engines to power a 20MW steam turbine, thereby providing 20MW of FREE energy to the country.
