This must be a thing of the past, business leaders warn.
Santo Domingo. - Until the authorities apply efficient billing policies the electrical service will continue in permanent crisis raising costs and making the nation’s productive sector less competitive, said Industries Association (AIRD) president Manuel Diez Cabral, and Industry Association Federation (FAI) representative Ignacio Méndez yesterday.
Mendez said the constant blackouts have limited their industries’ growth capacity, a historical problem which in his view will begin to be solved when the State-owned power companies (CDEEE) and other regulators make “everybody” pay for electricity consumed. “What must be done is to begin enforcing the Law, to jail two or three so the others see the consequence of stealing energy.”
He said CDEEE administrator Celso Marranzini must concentrate on paying what’s owed to the generators since it’s a financial deficit and not of energy production.
Diez said the industrialists are willing to collaborate with whatever the authorities need to carry out suitable measures of collection. The time has already come for the country to draft a plan to solve its energetic deficiency, beginning by the generalizing the payment of the billing, once that stage is surpassed we can think about increasing output.”
The heads of the AIRD and the FAI support Maranzini’s appointment and although they acknowledge that the electrical problem can’t be solved immediately, confide in his administrative capacities.

Pay for what you use.......what a great concept!
Corruption is so widespread in DR, at every level, that-as a culture-we are effectively pathological cheaters and liars, etc. No one can be trusted-no one! Not even the clergy! Everyone is on the take, and no one can do a darn thing about it. Judges are corrupt and don't respect the law any more than those deported/forecefully repatriated dominicans. They release common criminals on whims; if they fail, then they just get LF to issue pardon. What a country!
It would be a monumental task to try to redress every aspect of corruption in DR overnight, as some corrections would take two generations. Nevertheless, we should choose 3-5 areas maximum and fix those and let the success spill on to other areas. It is only when we have dininsihed corruption to par level with other advanced countries that we will be accepted and respected.

Our inclination is to throw the bums in jail who steal power. But stop and think how the people feel ripped off everyday from government and its private sector monopolies and I can't blame them. If I knew I could get away with it, I would do the same just to remind the govt that they can't victimize the public and get away with it. The people are actually punishing the government and deservedly so.
I know this sounds anarchistic but I think the best way to increase lawful compliance is to get an honest government to obey laws too by cleaning house of corruption throughout the country. Rather than throw all the dishonest people who steal power, I would rather see all the corrupt politicians and their private sector corrupter in jail first. I think people would be happy to turn themselves in during an amnesty period provided they stop getting ripped off by the government and private sector mafias first.

Ok i pay for my expensive ass electricity every month, if not they will disconnect after 28 days.
Now what i dont understand is how can, my meter consume more kilos in a month with barely any electricity (blackouts every day), than a month that had electricity everyday. I report this problem, and its like nothing, there is really no way of fighting this.

Starting with the huge bureaucratic electricity agency that has over 2000 people working for it and could do the job with 40! The Dominican Government headed by Lionel has to bite the bullet on this and force change. Yes jobs in the bureacracy will be lost, and many people, both rich, middle class and poor alike, will have to pay for their level of consumption, but what is the alternative? No one is going to subsidize our corruption and malfeasance the losses in businesses, government, health, etc., attributed to the chaos of the national electrical system, will only magnify the diffienciencies in the future. In short, it's way past time the leadership gets on board with fixing this scandalous and pre-modern mode of living.

HEY? What a beer belly that is!! Looks like he is stealing cable. The power lines are up the pole at the top. Well this country will always have many problems if many people are stealing services that will cost the paying customer more money. I hope that they will have a Commision in Gov"t that will oversee financial systems the DR. to stop the Corrupt and stealing that is going on.
WAKE UP DR!!!! What a shame.

We manage an apartment complex. There are four, 4, apartments with legal meters and contracts that never receive a bill, and thus cannot pay. In addition, we have requested meters for 2 further apartments, but understand they have exported all the meters.
What a joke

derek,
I have friend who moved into a rented house. He went three times to establish the new contract, they told him that until the previous tenant paid the open balance to close his contract only then would they issue him a new one. On his third visit he was told he had to bring the lease and the owner of the house which he did. They told him as soon as the old tenant paid they would call him to come in establish the contract. The previous tenant finally paid, they never called and one day he came home the service had been disconnected. He went immediately to the office and this time he saw a another person, who said he could have established the contract three months ago, when he said he tried on three different occasions, the new person said I am sorry but you where given the wrong information by a new employee. He had to wait to be reconnected in five days during a heat wave, plus all the time and money he spent going to the office 5 times.

mrweepa1 that person you are making fun of is our one and only Josean his what you refer to as a beer belly is actually a tumor that he will have to have surgically removed before it takes over his whole body ....he is presently treating it with electro shock therapy as you can see until he can afford the surgical process which consists of a Haitian with a very sharp machete and a bottle of 151 for anesthesia and sterilizing the machete .....All of us on the forum wish him the best of luck and a speedy recovery

Not only do they steal the power but some theifs also steal the power cables to sell for scrap metal. I have a friend that lives in San pedro De marc and they cut the power lines off the poles in the area and alot of people had no power for about a month. This occured two times in three months. Also when there is no power you don"t have power to run the water pump in your home and have to pay a water truck to fill up your water tank on the roof. Well, if this happened to me near my home The crooks would not live to long because Id" be there to shoot them down off the pole. you bet I would not go with out power that long.
