SANTO DOMINGO.- The topic of Haiti’s economic problems with its consequent effects on the Dominican Republic is again a hot issue after ex U.S. president Bill Clinton’s recent statement that it’ impossible to tackle the island’s problems as two separate things.
Aside from Dominican ultranationalists’ warning of attempts at fusing both countries, Haitian politicians have warned on the need to be wary of an "international conspiracy” aimed at using the DR to solve Haiti’s crisis, as stated recently by the president of the International Alliance for Haiti’s Recovery, Jean Bertín.
Haiti ex General consul Edwin Paraison and the sociologist Wilfredo Lozano yesterday joined the debate, who agreed in discarding the intentions to fuse both countries.
Lozano cautioned that the DR isn’t the one who must solve its neighbor’s crisis, and instead only the Haitians, and with the international community’s responsibility to create the conditions to find those solutions.
He clarified however that the country cannot distance itself form any measure of aid to Haiti, due to its proximity and economic importance, as one of the main markets for the local production.
Lozano stressed the DR’s sustained cooperation for Haiti in health, education and the environment, and reiterated that as neighbors both countries are forced to seek understanding and mutual assistance, a position Paraison also supports.

Oh boy,
Let us see how long this this article will be filled with radicalism stupidity (lol)... I will start with quoting the something from the article which is that:
"DR is and has been sustained cooperation for and with Haiti in health, education and the environment as neighbors. Both countries are forced to seek understanding and mutual grounds."
However, Haiti has got to step up greatly if this is to have any long shot at working at all. DR really do not have any attempt at trying to unite both nations as one because DR has nothing to gain from such a move as already Haiti have been far too much a burden for DR which is still a third world Country with its own problems simple as that.
P.S: The very first major social ill both nations could start being more pro-active and engaged on are the aspect of human rights and border issues I wish major change should have been able to be seen much apparent and soon.
From: Dominican Republic, Cabarete
Better laws for enforcement or re-enforcement infrastructures with some sort of a joint border Authority Custom presence of both nations could be implemented to tackle down illegal crossing and the influx migratory issue there is at hand.
P.S: I hope we could keep the discourse of our statements quite civil and with greater consideration to both creed, any creed on here. Let us refrain from the nonsense ill resented remarks and make this thread a constructive one perhaps .

But seriously speaking...I don't think that fusing the 2 countries will benefit either at this moment. Haiti is still too poor and the DR would collapse if it inherited a failed state. It would be like Costa Rica merging with a much less developed Nicaragua. I'm an internationalist and I've in favor of One World without countries and no borders, but it wouldn't be practical at this time for Haiti and DR to merge. Maybe in 3 decades when the DR is developed and Haiti is not on the ''least developed countries" list.
From: United States
Both sides quoted in the article are making silly statements. There is no "international conspiracy" for anything. Even if there was, Haiti really is not in the position to challenge it. Beggars can't be choosy. I do think Haiti is finally on the path to peace and relative prosperity but they must not let their pride get in the way of those well-meaning parties that want to help. As for the Dominicans they need to realize that nine million people next door has meant a cheap source of labor and markets for their ag products. A more developed Haiti can only benefit the DR.

I don't think it is suitable for us Haitians to join a country where its citizens will be soon forbidden to access their national facilities like beaches, rivers, lakes, coastline and lagoons. We Haitians are too proud to let ourselves be parked that way.
No, we're going to weather the storm and wait until we get back to our feet.
The Dominican Republic has been bought and sold by its own government the same way the United States have been bought and sold by the Bush Administration, leaving a bankrupt country to Barak Obama.
Haiti doesn't have all the economic burden of the Dominican Republic: We do not have a man power problem, we do not have a heavy debt burden. Therefore, we still own our natural resources and our national facilities. And even if our government are eyeing to deliver them to Corporates hands, some of us are watching closely in order to not let that happen.
Therefore, don't mind us, because we don't need you the way you need us and you know that.

Ok oupala07, DR has been bought and sold by our own government , is a bankrupt country. If Haiti doesn't have all the economic burden we have, if you don't have a man power problem, or heavy debt burden and most surprinsingly, your own natural resources and your national facilities could you explain why Haiit is the poorest country in America and Haitians cross over to DR by the thousands, and refuse to return to Haiti? How comes you don't need us the way we need you if are not the Dominicans going over to Haiti to look for jobs, food, clean water, health care, basic services, shelters, safety and the basic human dignity the lack in Haiti? They even come here to try to get a document that says who they are and where and when they were born.
I wonder what would be the situation if you would need us, the way we need you. Maybe there would be 9 millions of Haitians in DR!!!!!!

Honestly you're talking a lot of &^%^$#. Haiti is a mess right now. The Haitian government is now stressing foreign investment. The largest businessmen in Haiti themselves say they don't have the capital to develop the country so they need outside investment. So Haiti does need the corporate interests. If you ever go to Haiti again you'll see for yourself.

Whomever is behind the idea of fusing both countries is completely blind and out of focus about Island current status and its history. Just think about it, how 95% of dominican population would react if this fusion attempt is formally communicated. The first thing that comes to my mind is fire and blood, popular protests/rallies, riots, innocent human hunting...chaos.
If anyone in the international community is seeking a way out...I have one for you...since Brazil is leading MINUSTAH efforts in Haiti, why not giving Brazil the opportunity to create Brazil's first commonhealth, 9.5M haitians can be easily abosrbed by the south-american portuguese speaking giant...why Dominican Republic, we already have a heavy burden on our shoulders trying to figure out our own problems.

Man power? I think we should make the most of it...I mean North Americans have to deal with mexicans and some how they get money out of them without exploiting them. There are some companies(market research) they have a found a way to make money by gathering their opinions..I not saying we should do the same, but, at least, if we put news ideas to good use this man power could be useful...let's just convert disadvantages into advantages

According to some of the comments here, you can tell that there are a lot of innocent dudes here who did not even take the time to read the article titled : DOMINICAN LAWMAKERS PRIVATIZE THE BEACHES.
I wonder what keeps those fellow from taking a close look on Law 305 of their Constitution which plans to ban them from accessing their beaches, their rivers, their lakes, their coastline and their lagoons when those facilities have been ceded to foreign Corporations.
Those dudes are not aware enough to understand that all of these assets can be sold under their nose and they won't be able to access them at will.
And aren't the beach resort owners manning their facilities with armed guard? You're already parked people!
We Haitians, don't need to fuse with a country whose people can be parked at any time.
We Haitians want to have access to our countries natural resources and we will make sure that our government doesn't privatize them the same way yours just did it Constitutionnally.

As if the Haitian people weren't being "parked" decades ago... Haiti imports practically all of it's food. To top it all off, you have the UN stationed in your country. Sadly Haitians no longer had a say for a long time now.

That's if your people haven't destroyed whats already left. You realize how laughable this sentence was, don't you? In all honesty, Haitians hardly have time to fight against any privatization of their supposed natural resources when most haven't even had breakfast nor lunch yet! A pathetic attempt to stir up trouble...

Oupala you will need to take a trip to Haiti, to relearn the things the distance had made you forget, before you say anything else.
Haitians don't want, they need desperately access to food, clean water, jobs, health care, safety, fuel to stop the depredation from becoming irreversible (About what natural resources you are talking with little productive land and not water, not even much dirt, which is being intensively used for food). They have no so desperate needs like a document that tell the world who they are, they names, when and where they were born, birth control and some preventive health care that vaccine them against preventable deceases and treatment for others eradicated or controlled in most American countries. If they have not make sure (will they ever) that their government provide those basic things, that by the way equal to basic human rights, how will they prevent privatization or anything else? And when will they do it? Maybe on their way to DR to prev

It is true that we shouldn't merge into one nation...but it also true that the economical problems of haiti are affecting DR , therefore we should rise above our differences and join forces. Our polictics, people in higher places as well as haitians higher-ups should work together as one to reach out for a feasible solution. Let's keep in mind that North Americans set an example for the world by choosing the first black president so Why do always Highly developed nations have to take the first step? I have read hatian history and I have come to realize that there were many smart haitians who tried to straightened up their nation, but some other groups were dead-set against it*****I know there are also smart dominicans who wants this problem resolved further more, history has shown that many nations has been unable to achieve that (china and japan, jewish and arabs,etc)..so why can't we be the first island who set a precedent?....let's just devise a plan in hope for a better future

Uniting the two countries will NEVER happen but the prospects of its attempt frighten me because whatever little peace can still be enjoyed will succumb to civil war, genocidal mobs, and a violence unlike anything seen before on our island.
