Santo Domingo.- President Leonel Fernandez met for more than one hour yesterday with United Arab Emirates Foreign Relations minister, to confirm the start of construction, in the next few days of a modern 600 megawatt natural gas plant in Manzanillo, Montecristi (northwest), at a cost of US$800 million.
The presence of Sheikh Abdallah Binzayid Al Nahyan and the official delegation stems from Fernandez’s visit to Qatar and the United Arab Emirates eight months ago, when he held various meetings.
After the meeting Al Nahyan held a press conference accompanied by his Dominican par Carlos Morales, and firmed the establishment closer relations. The Arab official said his country will also install an embassy in the country, which will serve all of Latin America.
Al Nahyan said he felt impressed with the country’s beauty and with Dominicans and also with its relation with the company that manages the Caucedo Multimodal Port, adding that his nation may also invest in the country’s energy, financial and tourism areas.

These Arabs are very shrewd.
Not even Leonel will be able to out fox them.
If you think they will operate the plant and not get paid like the other distributores then you are sadley mistaken.

Oh deary me , not even a good story like this can stop another negative comment. When will all the perpetual deriders of this lovely country say a positive thing ?? The UAE are not doing anything to be foxy ..they are an old civilization that is now rich and they are taking their place as a responsible international country .
I say thank you to the UAE for your confidence in the DR for establishing a plant and an embassy here .

Why would the DR need the UAE's help in building a natural gas plant? Of all the countries to help them, why the UAE? The UAE is incapable of doing anything on its own. It's own power plants, as is everything else in its country, are built and run by foreigners. So why are they coming to the DR to build a power plant? It looks like they see a lot of potential in the DR and want to do some massive investing - this is just to get their foot in the door. Money injected into the DR economy would be good, but there are always strings attached. Plus the thought of developing strong relationships with backwards and corrupt Arabs doesn't feel right, especially given the DR's political tendencies.
I've lived in both the DR (two years) and the UAE (three years), and I have to say that I hate the UAE with a passion. It's a third world country with tons of money. It's like the DR baseballers that have no class and tons of money - it's hard to stomach. Emiratis walk around like they own

the place, cut you off driving with their luxury cars, flash their lights for you to get out of their way (even if you're in the slow lane), cut in front of you in queues, bark out orders to whoever they're talking to. They think they're god's gift to the world even though they're completely classless. Don't be fooled by their fancy buildings and hotels - it's a third world country at heart. We're talking about a place where couples get arrested for having consensual sex in private, where women are deported if they give birth to a child out of wedlock, where girls are checked to see if they're virgins before marrying, ...
The UAE government is run by a thug family (didn't anyone see the video of the Al Nahyan brother torturing a fellow businessman) that uses the country's natural resources as it's personal piggy bank. Corruption and nepotism reign supreme there, and now they're coming to the UAE. I hate to think that this union is because birds of a feather flock together.

juwagr,
Good comment.
Sounds like the UAE and the DR are very compatible.

Natural Gas prices are not the most stable commodity. People are fools to think that if and when the new Energy Tax Bill passes in the USA, Electric Utilities will be looking to replace their coal fired plants with NG. Should this happen, the NG prices will increase. The DR is being very shortsighted in thinking that NG plants are their salvation to the Electrical Problem. Yes, it could help, but without a strong hand to eliminate the corruption within, I can safely say that in 10 years the DR will be in the same condition/position, that it finds itself in today. Look below, at US NG prices over a historical period (they follow global NG prices)..

Today's NG prices are very good, but what shall tomorrow bring? As was mentioned before, the ARABs can't even wipe their own butts, without the help of foreigners. LF is only fooling himself and his people. The solution is for the DR Government/DIstributors to pay their past dues (not

(not incur more penalties) and eliminate corruption and stealing of power. LF is not a leader, he would not even make it as an Asst. Manager in a fast food rest. I say, Clip his Wings and pack his pajamas. MVM is going to be even worse for the country ! btw,,,Lets see how long it is before the Big Dig Project in Miches breaks ground !! A BANANA REP, Full of Hot AIr and a bunch of enablers sucking on the big tit for a few pesos ! What a shame for such a country with grand potential.

Now before we send the "honorable minister to Guantanamo" let's clear up the confusion
"Arab Emirates confirm natural gas plant for Dominican NW"
"Al Nahyan said that his nation "MAY" also invest in the country’s energy!"
"MAY" doesn't sound like a confirmation to me other than in LIE-onel Fernandez's desperate for a positive headline news spin machine!

I think it a good thing.....
THINK JOBS.....
The Arabs can be as shrewd as they want, but the plant is on Dominican soil.
The DR can just write em an IOU if things are a little tight around the Prez's office.
Nope the DR has to realize that its a global market, and exploit all resources. I did not read the US goverment was going to help its Caribbean Neighbor, but the Arabs are willing...
So when does the check clear the bank?

juwagr another person who wants to drive investors and partners into the ocean with totally inaccurate statements about a country you probably have never been to and that follows the stricter laws of Islam rather than the promoscuity of the DR.
You can join Dreadlocks and Josean as one of the people who prefers to speak badly of most things that people are trying to do to help the DR...fortunately all of you appear to live outside the DR aand can not cause too much damage

Ricardolito, I just returned from a three year stint in the UAE. Believe me, I know the UAE better than you ever will. Your comment about "follows the stricter laws of Islam" shows your ignorance of that region and makes me laugh - what, did you watch a half-hour special on Dubai (produced by Dubai PR) and think you're an expert on the region now? Sure, they cover themselves up and avoid intermixing of the sexes in public, but all their screwed up laws make them repressed and lead to other problems (e.g., homosexuality is huge there because of lack of access to the other sex, human trafficking and prostitution, ...)
A ver, what other inaccurate statements did I make? The one about the royal family member torturing someone (who incidentally was never punished)? Look it up -
http://www.cbsnews.com/blogs/2009....ld/worldwatch/entry4990516.shtml. The specific laws I mentioned? Look those up as well. Do you go by facts, or do you just go by your intuition?

Big Al Nahyan was given the royal treatment with all the avoided stops to the many undesirable places in the DR.
Good news for who ?
The real tragedy, as always it sounds good for the few.
When will the DR start it's own improvements from start to Finnish with out outside help.
