SANTO DOMINGO.- Workers of the contractor Isan yesterday concluded the installation of the pipes to relocate optic fiber cables and continue the preliminary work on the Santo Domingo Metro’s second line.
Construction manager Circe Yadira Issa said a ring of pipes was concluded yesterday, "through which the new fiber line which communicatew with El Cibao will be diverted so it doesn’t obstruct the Metro’s new line."
Transport Reform Office (Opret) assistant director Leonel Carrasco said despite the advances, a section of topsoil adjacent to the John F. Kennedy-Luperon avenues must still be removed and several sewage pipes, electrical and telephone cables have to be relocated.
The second line with14 stations, to be built at an estimated cost of US$790 million, would link the subdivision Los Alcarrizos with Maximo Gomez avenue in downtown Santo Domingo.
On the western side of the Kennedy-Luperon intersection, tall columns of rebar, were being erected yesterday, which Carrasco calls "the metro’s preliminary works," and the site of one of the future stations serves as the storage area for the heavy equipment.

Yes, this is called modernization; the tracks and the trains and their tunnels can't be transferred to Swiss Accounts and so they represent material progress for the nation. I say just do it and continue with all these modernization. Would love to see more being done on the education front. The agricultural products being exported are part of the equation for meeting future repayment obligations, and tourism will determine a large piece of the pie, as well. All in all, I see forward pace and it's good to witness. More creativity, more cultural revitalization, and greater Dominicanidad. We should strive to enhence the term Dominicanidad with quality and determination of effort. A nation of doers not blame artist.

Also how come the "overpopulated Santo Domingo" can only generate 20,000 riders a day, when it was it was sold to us that 200,000 desperate people for "better" transportation, would be willing to flock to it on daily basis?

Allocate money to resources that are sorely needed. If you are going to progress build it right or dont build it at all. heck build a train that can go from one popular town to another than you will see all the good praises, but from one dead end to another and see all of this money going into it, doesn't make sense financially. i'm all for DR being progressive but when you spend money like it grows on trees then you have a problem.

Yet can barely keeps the light on, simply because it does not have the money to do so expanding on a project that clearly Can not meet it's projections is consider money well spend. Let's face it, Sto Dgo has a high population density.
Under such circumstances, it is very difficult to move around and gridlock is inevitable.
A METRO Is a time-proven effective medium for conveying the masses from point A to B. It may not prove cheap, but maybe it doesn't have to be.
In a crowded community with poor infrastructure, perhaps private transportation, motoconchos, micro buses and donkeys might not be most effective means of transportation.
There is the issue of noise and emissions pollution, fossil fuel cost [Hugo gets way richer!], quality of life, etc. METRO makes some sense on some level but, like everything Dominican and everything present administration does, execution was dismal.
Yeah, predictably, there will be some who will say this was an extravagance we clearly could not afford but, in general, that applies to just about everything in DR, for we have an insatiable thirst for consumption and good things in life-even we can't afford them!!!

Josean, why even bother to go as far as singapur, that sounds way too far, use NYC.
Only after the educated class became so large, mechanization began in NYC, which them resulted in the industrialization of factories and small business, leading to the development of the most powerful city on the planet (well only after a few months ago, London is now, following sydney and then my beloved NYC).
But if you look at Sydney, only recently have them overtaken on a infrastructure revamping frenzy as a result of their economic expansion and explosion in their educated residents which are made up of large numbers of south asians immigrants.
London, the same, as the great universities have been there hundreds of years ahead of the TUBE.
This is politics and people are falling for it. it is just Balaguer did and many of those roads are under utilized today. People have to first be educated and skilled, before tech. IMPORT SKILLS FIRST AND THEN TECH.

Moto-concho today, Moto-concho tomorrow, Moto-concho Forever!
To paraphrase Ole George Wallace again,
Education today, Education tomorrow, Education Forever!
There is no other way to develop or modernize period. ¡Carajó!
