London. - Tourism minister Francisco Javier Garcia announced Wednesday that English developers plan to invest around US$5 billion in Pedernales (southwest), in an ambitious tourism project on an area of around 70 million meters, which in his view will transform the country’s entire South region.

“We had a meeting with a group of English investors, which has evaluated the entire Caribbean region to realize important investments, and they‘ve told us of their decision to build a tourism city in Pedernales province at a cost of more than five billion dollars,” he said.

Garcia said aside from that investment, the English industrialists, who’ll travel to Dominican Republic in the next few weeks to announce the investment and present it to resident Leonel Fernandez, will also build an airport as part of the project. “This is an extremely important investment for the country’s South region and is very important because when we met we asked them if it was only a project’s concept and if they had secured the funding, but they are connected to companies and financial institutions and have obtained this project’s complete financing.”

“It is a great complex, it’s a tourism city that is going to completely transform, not only the province but the entire South, which includes the part of the Barahona, Bahoruco and Independencia region,” he said adding that the investors will build an international airport capable of landing wide cabin planes.

Do you think you can keep your greedy little hands out the pockets of the developers?

I highly doubt it.

Inbred entitlement mentality.

Poor Blut and XWill don't have any friends in Marbella any more........... we can guess why - now they choose areas that don't ooze coastal charisma and are far away from superb wild life parks typically among big city wastelands...... So DR goes from strengh to strengh and the new A380 will make it just a stones throw from the major European capitals with its superb level of sophistication.

the boeing 747 is better on fuel than the a380. I dont think a plane that big is needed for the Southwestern part of DR. Too many empty seats man. If we were talking about NYC to NYC than its another animal

You were among the Eurotrash in Marbella hard to believe. Your Sunsekker carefully moored while you drank champagne on the key of Puerto Banus with your chosen elite Eurotrash?
A tought life - and now in your land of Broken Down TV's - by the way your competition is up for sale in SD - good chance for you!

Question is what is the "Quid pro Quo", or what do the investors want in return for their investment?
Whole thing sounds fishy to me, and I am rather skeptical of the "investors", more so if no hint or names were given.
Sounds like some more BS, cuz why would they need to build another airport if the Maria Montez airport in Barahona, is huge and capable of landing wide body planes and not being utilized to its full potential.

The way I see it 5 billion to this forgotten area is like a drop from heaven. But at the same time God knows what is about to happen once our neighbor discover that a lot of dough is coming this way. I expect another Punta Cana at the beginning where 50,000 Haitians will head down there to work and stayed there after and then finishing like a Puerto Plata where it will be turn into a dumpter. No se que es peor la enfermedad o la cura.

Too much development! It seems that most of the country's coastal areas are becoming tourist hubs. We need to protect the coral reefs. At the end these resorts only help the investors and the (nationals) Dominican partners involved in constructing and partly financing these types of projects. Turning the country into a big resort is not going to help environmental issues get any better.

Javier Garcia is beginning to believe his own lies/BS. Two years ago it was a billion in Cabarete, remember? About the same time two more projects announced 2 billion in Punta Perla (East) and $2.5 billion somewhere in SPM. OK, What about $2.5 Billion Angsana Resort Samana announced 3 years ago? Come on folks, stop the wishful thinking, $5 Billion? Whenever Wynn Resorts or Trump announces a large project ~1.0 Billion, it make news around the world. What is the credibiity of an announcement of a $5.0 Billion project and nobody listens?? Caramba !!! Wake-up people, they are blowing smoke up your butt...

Why is there always negative comment when investors want to bring their money into this country?? It is completely irrational and unbalanced.
In any other country this type of investment would be warmly welcomed and negotiations would commence so that both the country and the investors were properly rewarded ..All international investors are aware that there has to be a mountain of studies and conditions before any work can begin . The DR relies very heavily on a good tourist trade and the SW area is a logical place to have a large tourist investment ..Having said all I have some suspicions here as a plan of this magnitude would only be capable of being undertaken by established developers and tha lack of names is most unusual

juango reminds us of this

Javier Garcia is beginning to believe his own lies/BS. Two years ago it was a billion in Cabarete, remember

yes, the same cabarete which is dying on the vine. all the Russians have picked up their toys, and buggered off. too many government bureaucrats trying to bleed them, a thing Russians do not suffer gladly. a rising tide floats all boats, and, as such, i wish all the islands recover robustly. but the time for crowing and backslapping is over, guys, at least for now. do not listen to people like Blutarsky, who personifies the bromide HE WHO KNOWS NOT, AND KNOWS NOT THAT HE KNOWS NOT, IS A FOOL. SHUN HIM.

WELL Dred is back unfortunately. It was nce not to even pass by his psuedo intellect and that is being kind.

This aint gonna happen. NO one would invest that kind of money there and NOW in this economy.

I will book this bet. Every major project even by well funded companies who have already bought the drit is n indefinate hold.

Just another Picture taking event that means nothing.

Blutarsky the Great,

If they are the kind of people who brought us abc, then please keep them out at any cost.

I am already worried that they want to build yet one more airport, when there is already one nearby which is underutilized.

In any case, the Brits are not known for great taste in tourist resorts. I have an office in Milton Keynes, UK, and travel there frequently. I can tell you that both British hotels and food are not my favorites. They both rank near the bottom of what Europe has to offer, at least the portion of Western Europe I frequent: Luxembourg; Switzerland; Netherlands; France; Italy; Spain and Portugal.

Just another tipico project announcement that will never take off: between the multi-modal port of Montecristi, the XXXXbillion in Cabarete, the XXXXX million in Canoa (from a RD$20,000 C X A!), it's all wine and dine on our dime.

5 billion in Pedernales? Give me a break. Is that before or after the Canadian mining company will develop Cano Rojo, and get rid of Cementos Andinos?
