Santo Domingo.- The company of Russian capital Gazprom Transgaz will install a natural gas processing plant in the port of Haina, for freight and domestic use and several modules to generate electricity, at a cost of US$800 million.
In its operational phase the project will generate around 1,000 jobs 6,000 and construction is slated to start within four years, said Foreign Relations minister Carlos Morales and Gazprom general manager George Fokin in a National Palace press conference after meeting with president Leonel Fernandez.
Fokin said the project includes construction of a tank to hold 250,000 cubic meters of natural gas and 3 generator modules to produce 300 megawatts of energy.

Country bumpkins playing against city slickers.
There shall be no skipping payments to Russians, for they know how to play hard ball. So DR, remember to pay your bills on time, so LF is not sent to a Siberian gulag.........on other hand that could really be great. Putin doesn't play games, and LF doesn't know what he is in for.
More steps like this one, and our whole country would be mortgaged in perpetuity and, for what, so LF and his cronies and the whole oligarchy could enrich themselves? Turn this down and find other alternatives. I would much rather deal with a guy like Chavez than Putin. At least we know Chavez couldn't really come after us when we skip a payment or two.
Perhaps this would be an appropriate time to invoke the Monroe Doctrine.

With all the people eating beans there in the DR why do they need a Natural gas plant ? just Bottle the farts and you can cook with it. That"s what is also "going green".

Weepa,
I propose abc set up small soup kitchen in every corner of his barrio, giving "habichuelas con dulce" to every citizen. That should keep a steady supply of natural gas, and we would create lots of jobs and private entrepreneurs. This is just the kind of work that would suit him, and the kind he would promote.

Fortunately ,I believe that the vast majority of dominicans will welcome this planned development and will see the benefits it will bring to the DR. At this stage we do not know the details of the development so it is impossible to say what Domincan funds are involved or whether there is a loan ageement or whether the Russians will build the plant and then sell the gas here...All the comments of gloom and inevitable fights with the Russians are without any substance but are a pattern here of putting this country down ..when the majority of residents here can only speak proudly and well of their country .

I am not sure I trust this initiative. The Russians have been prone not too care much in building quality and have had major accidents both in Russia, and internationaly (mainly Poland)

Smells more like the Russian mob is trying to move in on DR. Leonel doesn't know what he's getting into. These dumb politicians will take any money under the table to negotiate a contract only for it to come back and bite them is the ass in the future. I've seen how these guys work. There very intelligent and very ruthless. So when sh*t hits the fan you will see more kidnappings, extortion's and homicides in the near future. There opening up a can of worms now. These guys will get only deeper and deeper into this poor country's pockets, you'll see. You've been warned Lionel. I really thought you were smarter than that.

Atabey, the only problem is that this President doesn't even know what to do with this problem. They sell the power plants, they buy them back for more money, They say one thing and do another, they raise the cost of electricity to give better service AND it only gets worse. They put in place 24 hrs day program which only works for a couple of months. They take away any grace period to customers so we have to pay ASAP but we see no improvements and it still has no affect on the crisis. you tell me what will they think of next. And not to knock down on Russia but they are known for being even more corrupt than some third world countries. So that is something to think about.
