Santo Domingo.- A specialist in dam design and construction today said the Jigüey-Aguacate hydroelectric complex (south) needs to be rebuilt so it can produce more energy at a lower cost.

Leando Guzmán said the cost to repair both dams is “insignificant given the benefits which will be derived,” and for that work suggested using part of the funds created to confront the prolonged economic crisis, as an economist recently suggested.

He affirmed that the energy produced by the hydroelectric system substantially reduces the oil bill.

In a statement the expert noted that Tropical Storm Noel seriously damaged the complex in October, 2007, including Jigüey’s turbine vents, which lowered its 100 megawatt capacity by 50 percent.

As to Aguacate, Guzmán said it was taken off line with serious damages to the machinery, reducing its 50 megawatt output to zero. “The energy crisis which is projected for many years deserves a look at fast solutions, because every day the energy demand increases.”

When fully operational the Jiguey-Aguacate complex’s 150 megawatt output is the country’s highest among hydroelectric dams, followed by Tavera’s (central) 95MW.

This seems a very worthy project to be included in a list for the IMF loans as it has a definite and quick return on investment

Is this guy crazy, we got more useless subsidized METROS to build!

Why would we invest in anything as practical and beneficial to WHOLE country as hydro-electrical production!

Next he will want to invest in a world class EDUCATIONAL system for the WHOLE country like Singapore and really begin to fix things!

It only took two years for these Einsteins to figure this out and then get up the nerve to bring this to everyone's attention? Must be Guzman didn"t get his monthly hush money.

Where are the tree-huggers on this one? In the US we are tearing down dams because of their ecological damage.

AntonoyC,

You got your dime in before I could get my penny.

That is so true. US has begun to tear down dams in earnest because of ecological damage. Since US is infinitely more trustworthy than DR, and since it has infinitely deeper knowledge and experience that DR on subject, I am inclined to side with US in this specific instance.

Problem with DR is that it borrows money for all of this technology, then it lacks capacity to keep them maintained and running smoothly and efficiently. Cronyism gets in the way of doing things correctly, and eventually ineptitude prevails. Bad for DR but great fro creditors.

We need a paradigm shift and very soon, and resolve to promote only the most capable and knowledgeable and move forth to take rightful place in world arena.

i am definitely not an expert on hydro electricity but I would have thought that the massive rains we had with Noel would have`been what is needed for a dam and for the turbines..you may recall that it was a storm mainly with torrential rain rather than winds ..but maybe there were some rubbish that came into the plant ..but it seems very strange .

Glomarexplorer, this country of ladrones can't build a simple road that can last more than a year. They steal 2 dollars of every 3 that goes in to anything here.

Failed State and no matter what it has going for it they neutrualized it by theft, corruption and GREEDYNESS.

Josean says what is obvious but the people that don't like the message which happens to be 100% evidential fact try to discredit her/him because they are not smart enough to argue a point unfortunately.

Escott,

Comrade Josean is usually well-read and prepared on most if not all issues. I don't know how he finds the time to dig so deeply into things. I find him to be generally correct, and enjoy observing those who choose to argue with him. Eventually, almost without exception, his detractors would resort to gutter talk-in defeat, of course.

It is indeed great fun to watch people take on Josean, only to be left holding proverbial short-end of stick. I learned long ago that, as an absent Dominican, I don't know enough about goings-on in DR to win a political argument with Josean and a few others.

I do enjoy observing evolving arguments/discussions, from my very high perch, between Josean and anybody else. I particularly enjoy any dialogue between Josean and Blutarsky the Great. I think they are both great individuals and, with Dr. Dread and Generoso, DT royalty. I appreciate and like them all.

Dr. Strangelove,

Thank you for those undeserved, but I know, sincere compliments. I will deposit my payment in your Nigerian bank account immediately.

Seriously doctor, I am never interested in wining, just in a good debate that brings a little light to all, especially me!

I think DT does a great service to our country by providing this forum, so we can show the world that we Dominicans come in all political persuasions and that we are passionate about the future of our republic and our responsibility to contribute to the world community as well.

However, I must take issue with one of your statements regarding the composition of DT royalty.

I am not in the “First Tier”

That is reserved for Blutarsky the Great, Dr. Dread, Generoso and yourself!

I am just a stowaway on this voyage, but I sure enjoy the company, even pepe 32!
