Santo Domingo.- The president of the Dominican Exporters Association (Adoexpo) demanded the repeal of the 1% tax on the value of assets, to promote investment, and affirmed that his sector is a victim of China’s policies.
Ricardo Koenig said China, with an undervalued currency and hidden incentives, “has snatched our traditional market from us,” a fraudulent policy he affirms has jeopardized exports.
Speaking during the Dominican Exporters’ 33rd Grand Dinner, Koenig said the time has come for Dominican Republic, along with the other Latin American countries, to lodge a formal complaint before the World Trade Organization.
As to the free zones the export leader said any amendment to Law 8-90 on their installation and operations must respect the acquired rights of the parks and companies of the sector, and exporters must take part in the discussions and given its decades of experience in any effort to transform it.
The Adoexpo president noted that the free zones are an ideal platform to attract investment and take advantage of international treaties, affirming that those who consider them an exhausted model are mistaken.
He requested the reactivation of the Presidential Promotion Exports Table, created by president Leonel Fernandez during the National Unit Summit. “We’ve yet to meet for the first time. We patiently wait to meet with everyone in this table, which is vitally important for the country, since in that manner the government would take an active and more aggressive position in defense or our interests.”
Koenig said the country’s main exports fell around 20% compared with 2008, for which he considers it urgent to create a program aimed at providing competitive financing for the industrial sector, and which conducts an objective analysis of the fiscal cost among the private and public sectors. “By means of Decree 244-09 of March 20 this year President Fernandez created a fund to promote the offer of exportable goods and services and financing for the country-benchmark. We hope that this initiative is present in the national budget.”

For those of you who have forgotten LF spent hundreds of millions on his highly publicized National Summit in February and we are yet to see one result, other than the increase in taxes to pay for this and other shameful wastes of our money.
And for the record, it is not the financing that prevents us from competing in the world market. It is our lack of caring about the quality of what we produce that holds us back. NOTHING ELSE.

Yes,every country has the same problem with China that relies on child and peasant labour at minimal pay in factories, dodgy practices in their mining industry and scant regard for the pollution of the world .
All around the world now ,it is increasingly difficult to find clothes that are not made in china ,even Lacoste now prefers there to Peru ...oh but what atrocious quality and reliability with size M differing from shirt to shirt , seams falling apart and labelling saying 100% cotton that is more like 100% polyester.
If there is one`thing i do not do ,it is to buy chinese goods.
Bad luck for the DR where quality and reliability of clothing is little or no better

Right on Ricardolito! Don't forget we are talking about "RED China". When you buy something from Communist China, you are directly financing the Chinese Communist government! I said a long time ago that the future "wars" of the world will be "economic power" and not "military". Now think about that for a moment friend. (IMF, World Bank, NAFTA, CAFTA on and on). The cards are not in our favor!

The whole world knows that China is pegging its currency to the lower level against the US dollar in order to boost its export. China has been doing it for many years. The US knows about it, but they don't say anything because they US needs China to keep purchasing its debt and China needs US debt in order to show investors that China provides security to foreign investors. But everything is happiness because China had become a landfill for Western industries. There are many things that make China very attractive to foreign investors. Some of the reasons are that companies are not so regulated concerning the environment, China has a huge mass of employed people available to start working, Chinese are better educated and more disciplined than Latin American population. The best thing for the DR is to improve education, political stability, and eliminate the deficit in the electrical system in order to attract more investors.
