SANTO DOMINGO. - The Vehicle Manufacturers Concessionaires Association (ACOFAVE) today rejected the Government’s plan to import 10,000 vehicles from Colombia, to be used in public transport, alleging that it jeopardizes their sector.

ACOFAVE director Enrique Fernandez said his organization can supply the country’s transport market without the need to import new vehicles because they allegedly have thousands in warehouse, for which they ask the Government to desist from the effort. “It’s better to first remove the vehicles in the warehouses than to import new vehicles."

Sagging sales

Fernandez said new vehicle sales so far this year have barely reached 9,363 units, compared with the 21,894 sold for this date in 2008, and a 45% fall compared with the 30,636 transacted in 2007.

The AOFCAVE executive said new projections for the auto market could reach just 13,600 units sold this year and notes that the fall could be as much as 27%.

Given that vehicule prices in the DR bare no resemblance to reality; I'd say good for President Sani Abacha (I mean, the Right Honorable Dr. Leonel Fernandez Reina)

yes, in DR they charge an arm and a leg for a clunker. Many cars have also been in bad crashes and fixed up and sold. Also, the mileage is also clocked back. Buy at your own risk in DR

Very good move Leonel. I have seen 2 things i like so far first the cement plants monopoly ended and the buyers are now getting cement half the price. now this car biz which had their own monopoly too is feeling the pain the comsumers have been feeling for a long time. I say go full scale and open border to anything we just don't produce locally(at good price). Now i like to see the alternative energy monopoly go away so people can start bringing solar panels to DR on their own.

Begs the question, why has ACOFAVE not moved to supply the current need? GOOD FOR LF... STANDUP TO THESE INTEREST GROUPS WHOES SOLE PURPOSE IS TO CONTINUE FLEECING THE COUNTRY.

Or maybe ACOFAVE will offer a bigger bribe, and then things will remain the same... KEEP US UPDATED!

Since when Colombia produces vehicles?

They buy them to sell and make a profit from stupid Dominicans.

Why don't DR buy them from the producer and not from a 3rd. party ?

Do we need a bridge to buy vehicles?

This what I call monkey business , somebody is getting money under the table.

They probably will arrive full of cocaine on the tires instead of air.

It is cheaper buy them from Japan or any vehicle producing country and for sure they will be clean and without defects and with warranties.

Why pay toll to buy a car?

My heart bleeds for the cry babies of ACOFAVE. They have had this irritant concessions and monopolies for new car imports at preferential duty rates for ages, and now they are crying because someone else had a better idea. The middle man is no other than the mega corrupt new ambassador to Colombia (Remember the Industry and Commerce Gas coupon million dollar fraud?) Mr. Angel Lockward, who was sentenced to prison, expelled from Balaguer's party, and then out on bail. He was recently condemned for libel and was fined 2.5 million pesos that he had to pay.
He was "rewarded" by the LF government in the ambassadorial post for being Mr. Slick I guess.
The cars in question are a Colombian only version of a cheap taxi to be purchased and financed by several driver's unions.

Cars imported from Columbia? That makes no sense.

What does make sense to me is opening the car market and prices will fall and juck cars will most likely leave the streets.

The car dealers act as if profit is a right it is a previllege for doing well by the buying public and they have not done that.

Has the dominican population gone retarded? Why would we import cars from colombia? Oh thats right, those cars would come filled with that pure white powder.

"...Colombia enters the green car era (with style)

Engineers in Bucaramanga presented Colombia´s first electric car to a proud audience of journalists, politicians and academics Saturday.

The Salamandra –Spanish for Salamander- is a two seat car the size of Mr Bean´s mini-cooper, with a curvy and compact design that brings back memories of the Volkswagen Beetle or the long time Colombian favorite, the Renault 4...."

It seems there is an automovile industry in Colombia...Who knew...

Professor,

Good to hear from you and a very good post on this topic.

However, it would have even been better in my humble view if instead of "He was "rewarded" by the LF government” you had said “He was "rewarded" by LIE-onel Fernandez the ambassadorial post for being Mr. Slick"

It just adds the right flavor to the "Sancocho" if you know what I mean!

Competition could be a good thing, but why not eliminate middle man and acquire vehicles directly from manufacturer and save money?

How is it possible that with all of that free flowing illicit money DR has only sold <10k vehicles year to date? That is so insignificant and 3rd world. It is no wonder we may have to acquire our vehicles through a third party like Colombia. I would have thought that total sold vehicles would have been more like 100k, or 10x higher.

Why Fernandez cares about not selling many vehicles? The DR does not produce any vehicles, so that money goes to foreign companies. Everything in the DR is overpriced. If a car battery cost in the US $45 dollars, they sell it in the DR for RD$4,000 which is about $115 dollars. Computer and everything importer are overpriced.

Belly,

Although you are God's gift to intelligence all of us are not as gifted and talented as you, certainly not me.

So please point out where in the article, that you were so kind to link to this post, where it states what you quoted “buyers are now getting cement half the price?"

The article actual states:

"The price of cement has also been falling by more than RD$10 a bag in the last days, according to hardware suppliers and builders."

I think you being the genius that you are know the difference between rebar and cement!

However, it was a good attempt at giving credit to LIE-onel Fernandez for doing something, although the facts were rectally produced!

The genius i didn't quote "“buyers are now getting cement half the price?" if you look at the statement i didn't add any quotes to the words which by the rules of the english language means i was NOT quoting any body but i guess under your english language the laws are different.

Now i'm quoting my self so don't get confuse again "I have seen 2 things i like so far first the cement plants monopoly ended and the buyers are now getting cement half the price." That is what i said if you notice there is not quoting which means is what i said not what somebody else did. I said that based on the information on the article and was NOT quoting any particular sentences of it. There is a big difference but you will get there one day where this much explaining won't be necesary

For me is easier to say i lost than try to follow your never ending series of confusion with simple statements. So the you have you won mr genius.

"Enrique Fernandez said his organization can supply the country’s transport market without the need to import new vehicles because they allegedly have thousands in warehouse, for which they ask the Government to desist from the effort." Maybe lowering the prices will help out and also assigning a non-corrupt commission to inspect the cars to make sure they were not in a flood, hard crash or had the odometer spun back some thousand miles would help clean up this market. I think it's ridiculous to see a Toyota corolla 1996 go for almost 7000 dollars (220,000 pesos) where there worth maybe 1,000 dollars in the USA, come on the car is almost 14 years old. Also the tax laws on importing a car are a joke here, that's why in my lifetime DR will never become a developed nation. There's big money in La Duana and the government get a big chunck in taxes but where does all that money go? to corrupt politicians pockets and stupid go nowhere projects. Que viva DR!!!

JCL,

You stated: "....., that's why in my lifetime DR will never become a developed nation."

DR will never become a developed nation. Not in my lifetime and not in that of my yet unborn grand children.

DR is 2/3 rd of a small island which lacks natural resources and infrastructure, and with a totally corrupt political system. It has a comparably high population, high unemployment and no real industrial base or prospect. With such imbalance, quite the contrary, I would expect things moving backward rather than forward.

A developed nation status should remain only an unrealistic dream dream for the Dominican diaspora.
