Villa Altagracia, first stop on the south to north route.
SANTIAGO.- The Santo Domingo – Santiago, train whose studies are the responsibility of the Transit Reform Office (Opret), would transport 142,000 tons of freight and 46,000 passengers daily.
Opret Assistant director Leonel Carrasco, who presented the railway’s first blueprints to industrialists, engineers and other professionals grouped in the guild (Codia), said the project takes into account the research conducted for the second Metro Line at the subdivision Los Alcarrizos, where he said a transfer station would be built. “The Santo Domingo-Santiago train is part of the territorial transport reordering program at the national level."
The official said the stations would be built at the exits to the cities Moca, Constanza, San Francisco, Villa Altagracia and San Cristóbal, among others, and that the Opret also conducted another study on the freight on the Duarte highway relating to all the towns along the way, to protect it from damages.
He said the 126 kilometer route includes construction of two tunnels next to La Vega, several steel bridges, viaducts, stations and terminals in several industrial parks; a 220 km/h cruise speed and a maximum of 250 km/h.
Carrasco added that the project would be built with private investment, via concession.

Are these the same clowns who overestimated the daily ridership of the Metro by 160,000 passengers daily?

Now the METRO was to have 200,000 daily riders but the reality is at best it has 20,000. So they claim the train will have 46,000 riders per day so the reality it will probably be 4,600 not counting goats and chickens.

Having more than decent conditions for port development in the North coast, this government insists in centralizing all trade flows through Haina, which is the most saturated port of the island.
Does this make any sense?

Remember "big dream, few riders". The Metro was forecast to have over 200,000 passengers daily and as of a report in this online daily of Sept. 7, 2009, the use was 50,563 passengers. So, one could theorize that the number of 46,000 for the Santo Domingo - Santiago corridor is also inflated, manufactured by the same source.
The government funds would be better spent to improve Autopista Duarte and the public transportation already in place.

fellini,
The broader question is "Does anything that this government, run by the con-man LIE-onel Fernandez and corruption incorporated a.k.a. the PLD make any sense?”

The blame goes to all Dominicans who continue to vote in officials regardless of party affiliation. It is not the PLD, PRD, or PRSC that one can fault, it is political culture. The ruling parties start grand projects that allow the politicians to line their pockets and those of their cronies with government commissions at taxpayer expense. The public suffers these projects, when the monies could be spent on worthwhile projects such as improve schools.

One assumes for the passenger trains there will be effective public transport systems at either end else any car driver is going to get in there cars and drive all the way to the final destination.

Some real numbers:
In 2008 Haina (both sides) imported 8,380,245 MT of freight and exported 1,112,431 MT of freight.
In 2008 the ENTIRE COUNTRY imported 14,722,000+ MT of freight and exported 3,772,000+ MT of freight.
If we assume that 100% of that went to Santiago and 100% of that came from Santiago (which is absolutly inane) and we run the train 5 days a week there would be 71,000+MT per day running on that train.
This is how absoloutly moronic the math is! Do any of you remember us talking about this last year? or in 2007?? or in 2005??? or in 2003???? or in 1999???
I hate to say I told you so (actually I love it) but people, remember over a year ago I told you we would be having this conversation about now, and I told you what the results would be...so, I must be a freaking psycic or...is it possible there is another explaination?!?
