CARACAS. - Dominican Republic signed two agreements in Venezuela to supply 2,500 metric tons of liquid sugar to Venezuela, as part of the commercial compensation program to pay for crude provided via the Petrocaribe pact, with goods and services.
In that regard Treasury minister Vicente Bengoa signed two agreements with the Venezuela Petroleum (PDVSA) branch Bariven, which markets those products abroad. He also announced that in the next few days he will sign a similar pact to supply 10,000 metric tons of black beans (caraotas), via the same payment compensation modality.
The liquid sugar is valued at US$2.9 million whereas the black beans are US$12.5 million, to pay for the oil Venezuela sells to the Caribbean nation through Petrocaribe. Dominican Republic will ship 500 metric tons of liquid sugar every month until reaching 2,500, as the agreement stipulates.
The official, who is under an agenda full of meetings in his visit this week, thanked the Venezuelan Government for its solidarity expressed through the Petrocaribe pact which benefits Dominican Republic, especially its most impoverished sectors.
Bengoa said through the negotiation, Venezuela sells oil with soft financing, which benefit the country’s productive sectors, as part of the debt is paid with goods and services.
He added that another advantage is that oil and derivatives are currently sold through the state-owned Dominican Petroleum Refinery, "without the intervention of private companies as before."

Hmmm!! If the figures quoted above are correct then liquid sugar is valued at $2.9m and black beans at $12.5m totalling $15.4m. The oil is quoted as worth $13m. So in who's pocket goes the $2.4m difference??

The biggest band of crooks in the country have spoken the truth for once.
The PRD says that: "Hundreds of jobs have been destroyed, thousands of companies have gone bankrupt, crime is at its highest levels in Dominican history, food prices are unaffordable for households, blackouts and the electricity sector are unprecedented, the quality of Dominican public education is regarded by the World Economic Forum as the worst in the world, public health collapses with the indifference of a government that is postponing the fair demands of doctors, transport, despite the enormous resources spent on the metro, is in chaos, corruption, the highest in Dominican history is on the rise, drug trafficking prevails, despite the PLD's rhetoric declaring that this would not happen, and it has found its main protector and ally in this PLD government."
Not that they could have done any better. But who can? We are quickly going down the tubes.

We have a wide range of people here who say the Dominicans are all corrupt, dishonest and liars and I guess they can also say that about this opposition political party who gives no indication that it could do any better in government than the current people.
In the meantime most Dominicans who do not seem to care much about politics will probably vote the current crowd in again simply because they are the best of a bad lot

The DR's tragedy
World Bank DR country representative Roberto Adrian Senderowitsch admits that the DR's greatest tragedy is that despite sustained high levels of growth it has not been able to reduce levels of social inequity. Senderowitsch told Hoy that the country had maintained annual growth rates of 8% and 9% but was not able to significantly lower poverty or reduce social inequality. He said that there needed to be a change in the quality of government spending if this is to change.
Senderowitsch says that the WB is not concerned about the DR's debt levels because this represents 36% of its GDP. He continued by saying that the DR's debt is under control and that all the government is doing is following through with a plan of public spending, "because investment can't stop at a time of crisis. But what is important is that it should be quality [investment]."

Senderowitsch said that when a country applies for a loan, its sustainability in the short and long term is studied and if the country doesn't pass, the loan isn't approved. The DR has had US$650 million in loans approved by the World Bank in the last two years, with most of the funds being directed towards the energy sector.

Black beans - world price of both black beans and sugar has been increasing recently.
People of Venez will enjoy many different black bean recipes. Cuban BBS is well known:
http://familyfun.go.com/recipes/cuban-black-bean-soup-699396/This is healthy food DR is sending to Venezuela, low in fat. However DR could cut oil consumption.
Its good that no US companies seem to be involved now the refinery is owned by Venez and DR.
