Eddy Martinez, in a recent presentation in Germany.
Santo Domingo.- Dominican Republic will close the year with foreign investment projects of US$2.15 billion and a 15% fall in exports, far lower than the 27% expected, and export around US$5.0 billion worth of products in 2010.
Dominican Republic Export and Investment Center (CEI-RD) director Eddy Martinez made the forecast yesterday, and said foreign investment had reached US$1.76 billion after September. “Yearend performance in exports has been better than expected because the shipments abroad had fallen 27 percent, but when we did a final tally the fall will be of 15 percent.”
The official said Dominican exports to Haiti grew 17%, becoming the country’s second biggest market, displacing Puerto Rico. He said so far this year Haiti has bought US$700 million just in formal exports.
Martinez said given that market’s sustained growth, Haiti is expected to buy US$1.0 billion Dominican products during the next three years.
Among the lines which contributed to the negative figures are exports, renewable energy, communications, tourism, real estate, commerce and industry, but some of the losses were compensated by a 12% growth in agribusiness and traditional products (sugar, cacao, coffee, non-processed tobacco leaf), the latter with a 67% jump as of October.

Economic observations for 2010
Three local business organizations said that adverse international economic and financial conditions provide less cause for concern than the Fernandez administration's excessive spending and borrowing.
The president of the National Wholesalers Organization (ONEC), Pedro Perez Gonzalez, the president of the Federation of Industrial Associations (FAI), Ignacio Mendez, and the president of the Association of Herrera Industries, Manuel Cabrera told El Caribe that loans needed to be channeled to the productive sectors.
El Caribe reports that a confidential report the International Monetary Fund prepared in October forecast that the Dominican economy would touch bottom at the year's end, after which a below potential growth period is expected through 2014.

Perez Gonzalez said that ONEC is concerned at what could happen after the May congressional and municipal election. He said that the country has an oversized state sector and a growing government payroll over the past years.
Ignacio Mendez said that the Dominican economy depends on how the US economy and that of Europe are faring, as these are the two leading markets for the DR.

Josean,,thanks for the kind thoughts and I enjoy Epiphany here in the DR and I hope there is more good economic and social news for you before then and that you will not splutter on it .. I am sure the two gentlemen you quoted are doing their best to get more funds into their own sectors and are happy to say what they think is necessary . One thing I agree with is that the government has a very large payroll andd I also believe that it would be better if statistical information came from one government source.
However ,I still believe that the economy here has bottomed and although it may be a patchy recovery both in geographical terms and in sector terms,it may be better spread next year .

Who should we believe on this one RICKY?
Great price but no crop to sell
International cacao prices have reached a 32-year high, but the Dominican Republic does not have a bean to sell.
The price reached US$3,582 a ton for May delivery. This is the second highest level since October 1977, and is a 20% increase just this year. The president of the National Federation of Cacao Growers (Conacado) Isidoro de la Rosa attributed the lack of any reserve crop for sale to a "lack of economic liquidity".
Cacao is a two-cycle crop with winter and spring harvests. On average, the Dominican harvest totals 50,000 tons. The winter harvest brings in about 10,000 tons and the spring harvest nearly 40,000 tons. However, this year the winter harvest is down, which de la Rosa says might be due to the very large harvest the year before. He added that if "there is no long dry spell in January, the crop will come back."

El Caribe reports that the Ministry of Agriculture's figures are at odds with the federation. According to sources at the ministry, this year's winter harvest is a record crop, especially the part that will be exported. In October, the minister said that the country would close out 2009 with a production of 60,000 tons of cacao.

Josean ..to tell you the truth I did not know that the DR produced commercial cacao as I thought most of it came from Africa and South America and was used in Europe for chocolates ..but I did some research and have found out that yes there is a small amount of cacao produced here in between 0.9% and 1.2% of the world production..depending on whose figures are correct.
Now ,if we could get the Belgiums to invest here for their chocolate ingredients ,we may be able to build up a bigger cacao industry but I not think I would be too worried at missing out on the higher commodity price when there is probably only a few thousand tons available for export.

Ricky the number one producer in the world is Cote d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast) , approximately 37% and second largest producers is Ghana at 13%. So 1.2% is not insignificant, although you want to make so, to obscure the fact that LIE-onel Fernandez agricultural polices are failure like all others.
DR produces a high quality organic cocoa bean which is highly rate in Europe and Japan. In fact I believe the Japanese trademarked a Quisqueya brand chocolate label a year ago or so touting the high quality of Dominican organic cocoa bean.
http://www.dominicantoday.com/dr/....ocolate-promoted-in-US-fair-tradeHowever, the point is not whether we produce thousands of metric tons or one ounce. The point is, here is a perfect example of a good opportunity for our farmers to benefit from exports to the world market, but LIE-onel Fernandez’s economic-farm policy has moved them backwards.

This is because his proprieties are to invest in projects that offer the maximum short term opportunity for graft and corruption for him and his criminal associates (like do I need to say the USELESS METRO and the soon to be USELESS Juan Marchial Complex) at the expense of the real productive long term solutions that benefit the majority of the Dominican people.
So I suggest you stop drinking LIE-onel’s KOOL-AID and drink some warm Dominican organic chocolate its better for your health and the Dominican framers!
