NEW YORK. - New York South District Judge Robert Sweet ordered the company General Cigar not to use the name Cohiba for its cigars made in Dominican Republic, a ruling which benefits the Cuban company Cubatabaco.

The ruling handed down on November 10 states that during the increased cigars sales in the U.S. in 1992, General Cigar took advantage of Cohiba’s prestigious name, owned by State-owned Cubatabaco, to market their own product.

General Cigar’s representatives said they’ll appeal Sweet’s ruling in the case which has lasted 10 years in U.S. courts. It said if it stops using the name Cohiba it would lead to losses of around 12 million dollars every year.

This story is far more complicated than meets the eye ......The legal Dominican Cohiba is not the one referred to in this article ....This is an American Cohiba made in the Dominican Republic for the American market but not sold legally in the Dominican Republic as that Trade mark is owned by a third party neither Cuban Or General Cigar but a Dominican company who has already contested the trademark in the Courts of the Dominican Republic many times and won many times ..The Cohiba trademark was registered in 1992 in Santo Domingo Marca Registrada 55555 to Caoba Cigars and is the only legal Cohiba cigar sold in the Dom Rep The version manufactured by General Cigar in a Duty Free Zone cannot be legally sold within the Dom Rep and is for export only .The word Cohiba is a Taino term for tobacco or the ritual of smoking it ..The Cigar Press has avoided this issue due to advertising pressure from large Dominican cigar makers who wish this to to remain unknown to cigar consumers CONTINUED

Good show, fair is fair. Cohiba's trademark belong to Cubatabaco, no one else. The copies made here are an infringement of copyright laws.

Hi buddy, the naysayers that don't know their a.s from a hole in the ground, are the ones giving "expert opinions" on the Tucano's, without even reading up about them or doing a bit of research.
They are the ideal interdiction planes for this terrain and mission description, as a matter of fact you could say they may even be tailor made for the DR, hell even the folks at Blackwater were buying some for similar special missions.

Cohiba is a Taino Indian term for tobacco or the ritual of smoking it and is not a Cuban specific word The company Cubatabaco, has litigated in the Dom Rep against Caoba Cigars the holder of the Cohiba trademark DR many times since 1992 and lost every time ...That said it is not legal for this cigar to be exported to the USA for sale and the General Cigar Brand Cohiba is not legally sold in the Dominican Republic...Cohiba/Caoba Cigars of the Dominican Republic can be found as always in their headquarter store in Parque Colon across from the Cathedral and fine cigar stores throughout the Dom Rep ...for further info contact "Boutique del Fumador"...809 685 6425 <caobacigars@codetel.net.do>, .or visit them they will be happy to show you the legal registrations and sample one of their fine cigars made by Caoba SA....PS these fine cigars have been made for a longer period of time than Cigar Aficionado has been in existence ...Smoke that Marven

the Cuban cigar industry and the history of the confiscation of many cigar trademarks from hard working familys is something the Cuban government will one day have to face up to and reconcile

Since communism doesn't work, and works negatives acceleration when run by bearded geriatric adolescents, Cuba can't keep up with worldwide demand for Cohiba's.
The DR fills close to half of their production deficit with a superior product.
Maybe the true story can come out in court?
Naw....

Actually anthonyc, the COHIBA was first made as a request of El Comandante in 1959 when he told the newly acquired Tabacaleras to make a special cigar for him.

yes, the tobacco companies were nationalized from private citizens, but the COHIBA brand is a creation of Fidel himself.
