SANTO DOMINGO.- Amid complaints of passengers and questions to the Airports Department, decree 655-08 took effect yesterday, on the new US$15 tax that people who enter or leave the country will have to pay.
The collection was applied by the different airlines, a measure that many passengers called abusive and inadmissible.
Airports Department director Andres Vanderhorst said the decree takes away functions from his agency and transfers them to the Civil Aviation Board. "Next Wednesday the commission is going to analyze in detail the effect of that decision, since the revenue collected at the airports is totally for the airport, without identifying where the funds from those rates would go, which were specified when previously created."
He said he disagrees with the decree’s dispositions, notified by the Presidency’s Legal Advisor, “but the Airports Commission is now going to debate it and we’ll wait and see what will be the decision that commission takes."

A lot of different airports around the world do the same thing. In some areas it' a departure tax, security fee, airport imporvement etc. Rest assured however, it will never go away.

The government agency greed to collect additional fees is a nickel and diming behavior that will backfire. Especially, when they don't know how this fee revenue is going to be spent. Which leads to the question of why impose a fee if you have no cause to do it? Potential tax and fee revenue gained from the private sector, such hotels, tourist services, and sales etc.; will diminish as tourists will seek other more friendly destinations and airfares that favor their pocketbooks.

Winston Churchill said: “We contend that for a nation to try to tax itself into prosperity is like a man standing in a bucket and trying to lift himself up by the handle”.
More taxes will not satisfy the fiscal predatory hunger of these tax buzzards.
They have shot themselves in the foot this time. We need airline ticket taxes to come down, not go up.
Meanwhile services at the poorly managed airport by the new Mexican owners have gone down to the point that in Las Americas the air is selectively turned off leaving passengers waiting for flights to simmer in the heat, electric stairs not operating and public rest rooms filthy with no soap, hand paper towels or toilet paper.
Maybe it is a conspiracy to attract tourists to Cancun.

The Dominican Republic used to charge a departure tax of $10 payable by the passenger while leaving the country. This tax was then added to the cost of the ticket by the DR. So this additional tax of $15 is on top of the $10 already added to the ticket. This is an abuse. It is only going to pay the bribes and graft of the local airport officials and political higher ups. This is called Dominican greed. Leonel Fernandez needs this tax money to pay for the Metro, so why not tax those stupid gringos who like to come to our country for sex. The DR is one of the most corrupt countries in the world. One word of advise, just boycott the Dominican Republic and visit Puerto Rico, lower airfares, US Dollar, less crime, and sunny beautiful beaches.

Of course Gen Churchill wrong. Sweden, with large state sector and high taxes is properous over the years and went through the great depression better than other countries. France was taxed heavily to build nucear plants that work well and now provide some of the lowest cost electricity in the World to the taxpayers benefit. Airbus Industrie was built up using taxpayers money to become huge employer and porfitable company, The truth is that some projects are just too huge, too long term to attract private capital. Another example would be to provide good restaurants for ordinary people in developing countries and set standards. As in previous posts the state must do this.

Jander, one of my jobs is to respond to gratuitously demeaning remarks made by people who appear to be suffering from a case of bad upbringing. to call the people of a country, or group of countries UGLY, has certain undertones and connotations, none of which are pleasant, or uplifting. ugly by whose standards? by european standards? japanese? malaysian? what criteria do you apply to come to this conclusion? in order to decide whether or not i should agree with you or not, i did a little GOOGLE on the history of international beauty pageants. it reveals that Jamaica, a country of less than 3 million inhabitants, has won the Miss World pageant twice, and Miss Universe once. that is a pretty stellar record, on a per capita basis. over to you....

Inasmuch as I would like to advocate curtailing travel to DR in protest over this tax, such action would likely cause more harm than good to those whose livelihood depends on money spent by visitors in DR. Besides, those geniuses who concocted this idea would only raise taxes further to try to make up for the losses.
