Santo Domingo.- Newspaper bizjournals.com reports that Corning Cable Systems will close a plant in the Dominican Republic by year end, although the company doesn’t disclose how many employees are being cut for competitive reasons.
"It was a difficult decision, but a necessary one to keep Corning Cable Systems competitive in these challenging times," the Web site says quoting a written statement.
The Corning plant is located in the Itabo Industrial Park, ten miles west of Santo Domingo, and employs around 1,500 workers.
It reports that on November, the company cut an unspecified number of employees from its Charlotte, North Carolina operations. “The layoffs were part of the company’s plans to cut 300 positions before year end.”
Corning Cable cited the economic downturn’s effect on demand for its cable and hardware products for making the cuts.

The bad news is spreading like cancer, with no cure.
josean, Do not give them any ideas.
Kitty my darling, be careful telling the truth or pointing out reality on DT is the equivalent of whining. To be accepted you must be a clapping seal or an ostrich!
How about a clapping ostrich?
I work in a professional and scientific environment where I see fond colleagues, some with 10-25 years of service, being laid off every week. Many of them would not qualify for any kind of pension, because they do not meet any of the following criteria: 1) 55 yrs age plus 10 yrs of work [same company]; 2) age plus years of work[same company] =>85; 30 years of service [same company]. At this rate, sadly, many of us are likely to be affected.
