SANTO DOMINGO. - Cemex Dominicana’s local cement plant didn’t escape the global crisis, as sales fell 25% in the last quarter compared with the first half of the year, with 20% of its fixed personnel laid off (around 160) since December.
Cemex Dominicana closed one of its production lines and ceased operations in half of its five concrete plants, as the company reportedly aims to save around 16% in its global operations.
In a videoconference from Connecticut Cemex Planning and Finances vice president Héctor Medina said estimated savings of US$110 million the remaining 16% will come from the closing of its operations in Mexico and through reduced capacity, personnel cuts and the use of alternative fuels.
He said the situation has forced the local industry’s members to apply similar efforts to reduce costs and remain competitive during the period. “Cemex Dominicana has adopted action such as the closing of one of our two production lines, the cease of half of its operations and the closing of five of our concrete plants and a 20% reduction of its fixed personnel, without mentioning the impact on indirect jobs that an action such as this generates.”

Shame on the Mexican owners of Cemex after they made such a humungous profits all these years.
The least they could have done is kept those employees at their job working less hours, maybe at half pay.
They just see the numbers and could care less about the loss of face, income and throwing all those hard working employees in the streets after they paid their dues and generated the company millions of dollars in profits.
Not fair, not right. Why don't they emulate Pepin Corripio for once?
If I was the government I would direct the cement buyers for government works to boycott Cemex products and buy somewhere else.

The sky is falling. Without going into the obvious reasons for the lessening of demand for cement:
Less cement=less building=less employees=less money in circulation=less money spent by unemployed workers=more businesses reducing staff or closing=less employed workers= = =.
The only thing that doesn't lessen is the shameful governmental waste of our money.

What do YOU do when your income is cut by 15-20 percent?
Do you keep on spending like nothing has happened, or do you take a look at where you can reduce your expenses and survive the downturn, temporary or permanent?
Where so you get off denegrating a company that isdoing what you would do in similar circumstances.
Your arrogant commentary is only surmounted by your complete ignorance of business practices.
Take a break from life. You'll feel better tomorrow, maybe....

Generoso,
I have a question for you.
Why does CEMEX exist?
It isn't to produce cement
It isn't to create and maintain jobs.
It isn't to garner your approval
IT IS TO MAKE MONEY!!!!!

I have no problem with any company which is doing less business adapting to the market conditions and reducing the number of employees or expenses.
However, I wish to make two points:
1) This is exactly the opposite of the policy of the government. The revenues of the country are decreasing and the wasteful expenses and number of employees is increasing.
2) The fact is that the government, which for some reason feels protected from the reality of the world economic situation, should realize that the reduction of employees by this, and many other companies is proof that the world economic problem is real and is starting to affect us here and the dominos are starting to fall at a faster and faster rate.

Hmmm..
Pretty harsh TB, I know what you are saying, but I see headquarters ar in the US, so .
It would seem that these so called "Business practices" may need to be taken back to the drawing board.
I guess their risk management team never considerd there would ever be a recession.
.Now everyone is running around trying to put our fires.
I had dinner with some US businessmen last night.
One was very positive the other I almost punched out becasue he was panicking we had to ask him to leave.
The positive fellow made plans along time ago and hasn't had to layoff anyone yet.
The idiot who was down here to cut more jobs , had not considered risk.
Sort of sums it up 50/50 smart vs idiots..

What wehave running the show are a bunch of newbieswho have very little business sense other than the "bottom line".
These guys have had an easy street to follow for thepast10-15 years since graduating from their different"business schools" and have not read enough economics adnfinance since them to make reasonable decisions. The only thing they iknow is "cut labor', which is usually the second largest expense showing on the books.
The entire business world is in a franic tizzy and scrambling to preserve as much of their capital as possible, and it matters not if that business is base in the USA or in Timbuktu, the attitude of management is the same, CUT EXPENSES.

The mental giants that make so harsh comments have never run even a corner convenience store
and they feel qualified to post their moronic commentaries.
They have no idea about "cost of specialized training" or the "learning curve" and the losses
caused by that in business.
They see the employees as expendable instead of an asset, more so in this country which is so difficult to locate, train and keep efficient employees.
Maybe in the states you can fire everybody and next day hire as many qualified applicants, but here is not so easy and you can't apply the same management rules.
It is not as simplistic as that. And the companies that do that are either taking advantage of the crisis to get rid of employees in order to save money according to the outmoded Codigo de Trabajo in DR that punishes the employers for worker longevity or have other plans in process like maybe trimming the operations for a future sale or merger.

TB, I might agree with you if I felt these morons made other improvements and this was a last resort.
I am sure there are at least three cousins that do nothing.

A very idiotic and novice poster suggesting business owner to keep employing workers in a deteriorating business! Never owned a business! The only loyalty an business owner has is to profits (not to the freaking workers or their wealthbeing or their families or their communities). The only time an owner cares about workers is for productivity and consumption and for government intervention when demand drops or inflation kicks in!

Generoso,
during the summer time back in the 80's I used to carry fruits from a vendor to a pig farm..(I had to use a carretilla) between 8-12 years old.. At 13 I founded a candle business from my grandparents farm.. (making about $3000 USD profit a month). I later went to work with my uncle in Santiago, while attending high school. I was managing 130 employees. I fired 32 within the first 100 days. Profit in the company went up.. ( I was 15 years old).
