SANTO DOMINGO. - The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) predicts the Dominican economy will decline 1% in 2009, as the external conditions continue deteriorating and the growing impact from the U.S. economic recession and the global financial crisis.

Stephen Keppel, Economist Intelligence Unit Assistant publisher, said a 2.5% contraction in the United States Gross Domestic Product, Dominican Republic’s exports will fall and there’ll be negative impacts on tourism, remittances and foreign investment.

“Investment in the country in 2009 will be higher than in other countries of the region due to the pre-established agreements in the tourism and mining sectors; however, they’ll be affected by the financial difficulties, lack of international liquidity and an increase in the aversion to risk,” he said.

The Economist will host the business table “Responding to the global economic crisis” in March in Dominican Republic, with around 100 of the country’s business leaders taking part, representing the Government, political and economic analysts.

The event is slated for March 18 in the hotel Hilton, with president Leonel Fernandez as one of the speakers.

Who is this kid? He needs to go back to his internship and learn how to calculate... DR economy will grow at least 4% in 2009. This will mainly stem from structural growth of domestic production.

When God wanted to create the horse he asked a group of economists to brainstorm
and elaborate plans for the design of the horse and what it will look like.
That's how the ugly camel was created and came into being.
Economist are worse than weathermen and don't know s.it from shinola.

you gotta love people like buenoha. contradicts the forecast of economists are a world respected periodical. man, oh man. so, buenoha, care to disclose some of the econometric models that you applied in order to arrive at your number? how about posting some of your regression analysis modelling for all to see?

Dreadlocks... You know, I am an Ivy league educated economist myself so words like econometric models and regression analyses don't scare me of. I must assess his data and his methodology before considering the yields of his study.

that suggests to me that you have not yet done it. so, that being the case, how can you assess his number as being incorrect? what if you look at his methodology and find that there is an error in yours? and , as generoso says, economists are little better than weathermen. slip a few unforeseen eventualities into the equation, and, depending upon the weighting, the whole analysis turns to porridge.

Well if we can end corruption in 2009 then our economy would grow by at least 25% but thats not likely to happen. i agree with buenoha in one thing for such a announcement this is not the best picture. At least put Joseph Stieglitz. Our economy growing in 2009 is not going to happen unless my first statement is true. But hey since we can rely on LOAN to face this crisis even though we have no surplus who knows maybe they have a trick up their sleeves

Dread, When you put your cursor on the triangle the text comes up "this user is banned" for whatever that's worth. His posts continue so the signage is contrary to reality. I for one always enjoy reading GC's posts.

You believe the economist but you have not looked at the data either dreadlocks.
Example: read any analysis from the 20 top oil experts, they all have different predictions.
They kid could be right or wrong... magic 8 ball time I say.

you see, armpit, when you were posting under that other name, and stalking me every day, other posters warned you to cease and desist, because they too had just about had enough of your childish folly. i specifically remember more than one occasion in which you received the hint that if you kept up the nonsense, you would be gone. well, it can happen again. you can reinvent your name, but your tactics remain the same. now you have resorted to outright lying to the readers, in an effort to discredit me. i tell you that you should see a psychiatrist; this is not rational conduct. having you banned, again, from the forum, is a plus. you offer nothing useful, anyway. do you believe that readers turn on their computers to hear you ask me if i have ever been to Punta Cana, or Casa de Campo, or France? begone, or maybe you will be!

keep stalking me all over the board and we shall see. maybe we both will get banned, but i will have made the sacrifice for the betterment of the board. remember the old parable "better one man should die than the whole city perish"? well, if i have to go to get rid of you, i will. at least some guys believe that i have something to offer. you are yet to make one sensible remark.

that is all i have asked of him, belly. just stick to the topics, and leave the personal BS out of it. but he follows me around like a mosquito, as if he has nothing better to do.and no, armpit; i am not threatening you. i am not like you, a physical danger to society. all my parts are in place. my elevator goes all the way up. i do not stalk people, pestering them like a child. people do not have to worry about their safety when they are in my presence, because i am not some razor edge, loose cannon. in your case, people have reason to keep their eyes wide open if they hear you are around, as you could snap any moment, and occasion mayhem and destruction. as i said, go get help; you are psychologically unbalanced.

But Leonel already said that he will borrow a large loan from IMF and other banks in order to impulse the growth of the country without increasing production.
