SANTIAGO.- The Immigration Agency will issue IDs to hundreds of Haitian workers in farms of the Northwest and other Cibao regions starting this month, measure aimed at having more control of the number of foreigners.

Immigration regional director Kenya Serrata said the process seeks to provide a legal migratory status for the Haitians, whom shed said work mostly in North region farms illegally.

She denied that Immigration is providing a temporary legal document to immigrants who work in construction or who roams the streets.

"Immigration will only issue an ID to Haitian citizens who work in farms, since the farm owners are the people responsible for those workers," Serrata said, adding that the permits will only be valid by a period of six months.

The issuing of IDs to the Haitians comes just a few weeks after almost 800 undocumented workers took refuge in Dajabón’s main catholic church, and were later repatriated by the Border Security Corps on instructions from Immigration.

Dajabón parish priest Regino Martinez defends the permanence of those workers in the country, alleging that most of them are serious people who contribute to the nation.

The prelate affirmed that worse the business on the Dominican-Haitian border is the traffic of undocumented people on the part of some authorities and individuals, whom he said profit from it.

You'd be surprised at the quantity of words and expressions that, notwithstanding their being common currency in Spain, are considered here to be swear words and indecencies. This attitude is what I call mojigateria (prudishness), cuz' the spaniards at least tell things as they are. Even the ones that are religious in their views find us to be excessively prudish to their tastes. Guess that we don't follow Spain in everything, as the usual suspects accuse us of doing on a routinely basis.

Let me say that I have personally experienced the offensive, childish wrath of his acid tongue, and his sophomoric humor, to the point that several of the posters here at DT have emailed me and asked why I take it; because I do not support censorship of any kind, much less banning someone!

So I respectfully ask that the staff of DT to reconsider their decision and ask the other posters to make the same appeal!

You have my entire support on that score, josean. Without GC's witticisms and occassional outlandish sallies, DT would be a very dull and boring place indeed.

Rewarding illegality is erosive, corrosive, and morally WRONG! These people never wished to comply with the 285 in the first place and now, with Dominican tax payer's money, we are legalizing these interlopers for free?

Given the open borders, the corruption at the border, and the inability to control it, more illegals will cross over to DR. I am quite sure that the two millions illegal are happy and the Port of Pigs administration is smiling!

thank you all or most of you for your kind words.....I thought I had been banned for using a Spanish expression that had to do with the character of Hippos face when I referred to him as Cara de M-------on but apparently it was for telling the joke about the venereal diseases and which one does not belong in the category....This is a very old joke and is published in even very strait laced publications it goes like this ....well on second thought..... if the censor thought it was obscene she has a serious problem and is truly a prude....I will keep in touch .....and return to insult you all again Good luck

Do you believe that Americans want or like Haitians living in Florida??

Absolutely NO The "evil empire" just adore and are willing to acept the
Cubans since They do have power and represent one of the strongest
"etnic" classes in the US.

Stop dreaming that US gives a BS about your country, They do have a
double standard for every political move "WAKE UP"

It is my understanding that the DR with this program is taking a first step to secure for itself the supply of agricultural workers that it needs for its harvest. There are no programs here for "migrant worker visas" as there are in the US. The only way to get proper working papers is to have a cedula - and for that you must have a passport from Haiti, and a visa, and a means of support, etc etc -- all of which most of the farm workers (and sugar cane workers and construction workers) do not have. Many of them - probably most of them - have no papers at all even from Haiti- no birth certificates, no identity papers of any kind. This is a step for the DR to ascertain how many Haitian workers it really needs - and then it can begin to tackle the problem of the "extras".

About the Haitians in the US - there is a massive campaign (google it) to get these Haitians temporary protected status. All 30,000 have been through a legal process for deportation- not, say, just picked up at a work site on a call from their employer who doesn't want to pay them on Friday and dumped across the border. An estimated half are released felons who have served their time and are being deported as part of their sentance. The US is the major donor of money to Haiti - the international community contributes the 70% of the cost of government there - so it is clearly not true that the US (or the international community) does not care what goes on here.

I so adore people who immigrate to the US and then call it the "evil empire"- why not come back here, then? Plenty of room. And warmer than Port Washington, for sure.

That might be so, annie, but the case could be made of the US being an "evil empire" in the sense of their not moving a finger to change the status quo that makes haitian migration a possibility, namely, to abandon their abusive trade policies regarding that country, starting with allowing the haitian gov to restore the necessary tariffs in order to revive the country's agriculture, or cancelling its foreign debt as it did with some Central American countries, to mention some of the very useful "teach the man to catch the fish instead of only giving it to them" measures that could do a lot in the resolution the present dilemma.

Double standard for everytthing, on one side China is a great ally because They provide cash
influx to american economy and right now are the ones supporting most of the US debt but
on the other side block Cuba and play the convenience card whenever is convenient.

Americans are twisting the main reality with the Haitians living in Dominican Republic and
are trying to impose their will and hegemony so Dominicans become responsible for a
mess that don't belong to their country.

Dominican Republic is my homeland and don't like the cheap propaganda to please some
people that hate us.

I can't believe I'll say this: We'll never get rid of haitian immigration in the DR. I'm worried that we could lose our identity as dominicans and our sovereignty. There are a lot of things that can be done to better protect our porous border, but they'll always be a big haitian presence in the DR. I guess the best we could do is try to counter that by allowing massive immigration from Asia and Latin America. lol no, seriously.

Agree with you and is sad to say that current Dominican president is smart in some areas but he is full of himself, weak and scare to execute power to protect our country, Pelegrin Castillo already said that He is working to please international community not to protect our country,

We need somebody with "Strong fortitude" to deal with this issue like a man, hero and patriot not
a man with scare in his heart, mind and will.

So far the only 2 proactive ones are Pelegrin Castillo and Wilton Guerrero everybody else is full of BS.
