SANTO DOMINGO.- Dominican companies are taking steps to sell equity in the stock market, as an increasing number can now make a variable yield initial public offering (IPO).

Securities superintendent Haivanjoe Ng Cortiñas said the recently passed Law on companies creates the legal framework needed for them to adapt their by-laws as a previous step to enter the stock market with variable yield equity.

He said the corporative governance concept will be an important element in the new social statutes of companies, to make the change from a privately-held company to a publicly-traded one.

Ng said 23 local Dominican companies began to take that first step by issuing fixed yield commercial paper to the public, which takes them closer to entering the variable yield market or to sell shares.  “There’s no way for the companies to take the step to a variable yield before as important step of corporative governance and minimum capital to adapt their officering as a publicly traded company."

In 2008 RD$42 billion were traded in the stock market, or a growth of 154 percent compared with the RD$16.5 billion traded in 2007.

I know they are everywhere even here in US but i would hate to see Darys Estrella's name get mix into something dirty. She worked so hard to make it there.I am Dominican and that would hurt me to see it happen.I have seen so many cases in DR that my expectation are not set so high.Lots of hardworking Dominicans have been cut up in the mix of crook politicians and friends.

Josean,

I think she is a straight shooter but i don't know about people around her.She worked herself to the top with hard work.I would hate for her to be turned into laughing matter. The first company that hired her out of school was looking for top talent at the time and they picked her so she ain't no dummy.I wish her the best.

She may be a straight arrow but you couldn't get enough straight arrows to protect a vacant beach in this country.

Transparency will be the key, along with a truly independent accounting/auditing community. An equity exchange is surely a step forward in the organization of a nation's economy but we have seen how even the most well regulated and liquid stock markets (US's NYSE & NASDAQ) have helped to amplify the pain of financial dislocations begun in other parts of the system (real estate). That in mind I wonder if any protections are in place so that if this market takes off an attracts capital to DR we don't end up fearing destabilizing, rapid withdrawals of that capital.

Barney Frank: Voters always laughed at the size of my reputation, but then I discovered Stimulus Package I quickly gained a reputation that makes the voters scream. It grew 50% in just one week and I am a changed man...

Charles Schumer: The voters go wild and crazy once they see the size of my Stimulus Package.
I love how they say I got pork. I love multiple media orgasms. Forget about fake enthusiasm - the Stimulus Package will keep it strong, firm, and long-lasting.

Chris Dodd: You will be absolutely amazed when you see your economy gradually becoming LARGER and LARGER, right before your eyes! NOTHING compares to the feeling of having a larger economy. I don't know where my career would've been without the Stimulus Package!

The country is moving forward.. we will be creating one of the largest stock house in the world.. In another 10 years... you will have majors corporations trading in the our small island.. imaging one trillion dollars a day.. and only paying a small fee of less than 8% tax of the profit..many politicians are going to try to get a piece of the pie.. but it is too late.. I wonder how big of the piece Leonel already got.. that we will have to wait and see..
Yes we are going to have crooks in this business.. just like Bernie and his ponzi scheme.. but the country will benefit from all the trades.. Some people will loose money and some will make money.. At the end you are only interest in how much money you made...:)

Remember this, the U.S. has the most regulated financial system in the world, nevertheless it cannot avoid fraud and the crooks that play the system. The whole world in full of crooks up to the gills. Yet people still invest their money in the world markets, and many make a profits.

At this point in time, we should give the Dominican stock market the benefit of the doubt. Of course there will be crooks by the truck loads, like vultures looking for opportunities. However, as we should all know, in the market; higher risk, may mean more opportunity for profit, or higher return. Like (risk return trade off ) in basic finance.

As far as the Dominican judicial system is concern, that is more of a concern at this point in time, for it leaves a lot to be desired, to say the least.

"Of course there will be crooks by the truck loads"

In DR we measure the crooks by the over-priced METRO car load!
