SANTO DOMINGO.- The country’s industrial leaders yesterday expressed concern with the strikes in several communities, noting that they create uncertainty and affect the productive dynamics in the zones where they occur.
Lisandro Macarrulla, president of the businesses grouped in Conep, called on the Government to attend the communities’ demands without delay. He said the strikes also harm those who participate in them, and have a negative impact on the inhabitants of those zones. “We understand that in some form the authorities must be proactive, to try to face the demands that are originating these movements.”
Although Macarrulla agrees that many of the demands that motivate these protests are valid, he said Conep considers that there will always be better options for the communities to make their demands. “At this moment of world crisis, local crisis the country’s political and social situation deserve maturity and a commitment by all the political, social and business organizations, and including unions, so the Dominican Republic can have the best climate of peace.”
Ricardo Bonneti, president of the young industrialists grouped in Anje, also expressed his concerns with the spate of recent strikes, although agreed that the towns have the right to state their displeasure, whenever there are reasons to justify it. “Every one has the right to demand and to protest their beliefs and demands in a non-violent manner. Every one can exert their right of protest.”
