Santo Domingo. - The construction and expansion of the San Cristóbal-Baní (south) highway advance at good pace, as equipment, technicians and workers are seen throughout the route concluding shoulders and opening some sections to traffic.

Public Works minister Victor Diaz Rúa said the work on the highway includes the opening of some finished spans of four lanes, and the elimination of bottlenecks along the route to prevent accidents.

The official said he instructed the contractors to accelerate the works, so the first 14 kilometers of four lanes will be ready by August, including 5 of the 14 bridges, road signs and guardrails.

The highway’s contractors are Constructora Malespin and Constructora JM, whereas Tecnoamerica is in charge of its technical supervision.

I hope that they never start enforcing the open beverage in the car law. I like that you can take a cold one to go, but some guys take advantage of this and drink too much.

Great, the last time I drove to Bani from Santo Domingo on 4-19-08 it was a night mare construction was at it's peak. I just wonder with all the unlicensed drivers making there own rules of the road driving cars that would never pass a safety check here in the U.S how long before we read about another traffic fatality, thus Christening this beautiful Highway...........GOD SAVE US. As always when ever driving in the DR drive extremely SAFE your life may depend on it.

I don't know about taking a cold one to go and enjoying it while you are behind the wheel. This just doesn't seem right to me. Driving is a privilege and not a right and, as such, should be taken seriously and respected. I am particularly concerned about the macho mentality and the dominican propensity for drinking to excess.....there could be innocent pedestrians maimed or killed, and that would just be wrong and punishable with ample time a la "Victoria".

I like my drink as much as any other dominican, but I try not to drink and drive-it simply doesn't seem right or responsible...I have just witnessed too many accidents of innocent lives ended too soon and families destroyed because of the actions of a drunk driver.

Go ahead and drink and enjoy life and all it brings, but please do not drive.

They've been "working" on this for over 10 years.

"San Cristóbal-Baní motorway advances at good pace"

"They've been "working" on this for over 10 years." - this is surely the real story
