Santo Domingo.- An exploration team from Spain which concluded its research in Dominican Republic yesterday affirmed that the sea floor near San Pedro (east) could have oil fields; that there’s a possible reserve in Ocoa (south), and conditions are also favorable in the North zone.
The lead investigator of the Spanish Investigation and Innovation Ministry’s project Caribenorte, Andres Carbó, said the first formal results of the research conducted at a cost of two million euros since April 5 will be released in November.
"We have high expectations that in those large structures that are being identified, we could make some interesting find," said Dominican Mining director Octavio Lopez, adding that a Norwegian company was contacted to continue the geophysical studies in San Pedro.
According to theories, Dominican Republic has a potential for petroleum towards the North America tectonic plate, whereas crude has already been found in Azua (south), but not enough to exploit commercially.

Yeah right, because our government has proven itself capable of doing great things, and managing its funds in an open transparent manner. I am ready to give someone else a chance. At this point I would rather be stolen from by foreigners.

There have been rumors of oil in DR since, well, since like forever and always the rumors end up being just that, rumors. My prediction is that this will lead nowhere. If there really was oil in amounts that were profitable in DR then the Spanish wouldn't even be players.

I hope that they contract someone responsible to conduct the drilling

There is no way any oil that is in Dominican waters can be stolen but I understand there are a few disputed maritime boundaries in the caribbean

We have had some disputes with the Brits regarding the maritime boundaries on the north with Turks and Caicos where the small island claims waters well beyond their boundaries, specially for a small island. My concerns are really enviromental when it comes to this.

Oh goody, another way for crooked Dominicans to swindle money from the people.
Arrest all the Crooked Dominicans and let the blackouts take care of shutting off the lights!.

While this is good news, it does not happen overnight. The geophysical data alone could take six months or longer to read. The tender for development by a oil company could take 6 to 12 months to develop once it is awarded the drilling plans need to be developed with selection of equipment needed and qualified drilling contractors pre-selected to bid on the job could take another year. Depending on water depth, production capacity and where to send the crude (pipeline construction, compression stations, to what refinery etc.) could take another year. While it is good news indeed it is not right around the corner.

TH, based on your experience in the field how much credence do you give this report?

Texaco actually drilled some wells on land a number of years back and they were producing wells. Who knows why they were not commercialised? It could be the BOE was low or the crude was extra heavy or the reserve was not big enough. Once a true seismic shoot is conducted in 4D the proof will be in the pudding. If it is determined they are Commercially viable they will development the wells no doubt. The stumbling block comes in getting it ashore and to the downstream (refinery) user.

I've seen videos of oil coming out of the ground without any drilling done in Azua. There's oil there, but "not in commercial quantities". Also remember that England wants the DR to give up some parts of our territorial waters north of Puerto Plata. There must be something in those waters.

It was the D.R. that asked the spaniards to help us. They have the experience and tools to do this research. There were dominicans in this exploration too.

This could be either really good for the country or really bad..depending on the type of leader we have in DR.
The DR could either become something like dubai..reaping huge profits from oil within the territory...or it could become another venezuala and have the US and other countries take advantage of it while the people get little or none of the money produced by comercial oil and suffer the same or worse poverty.
hopefully it will be the first one.
