SANTO DOMINGO.- Investors have deposited 71 renewable and conventional energy concession requests of more than 2.9 gigawatts with the National Energy Commission (CNE) since 2004, entailing investments of around US$4.4 billion.

However only a few projects started operating, including wind energy in Oviedo (southwest), the works on lands for ethanol production in Montecristi (northwest), and a biogas plant  in Bonao (central).

There are 57 concessions for renewable energy, 11 for conventional and 11 pending recognition, according to a CNE report on the legal status of the definitive and provisional concessions.

The conventional projects would generate 523.9 megawatts and most of the renewable projects, 2.38 megawatts, including a micro-hydroelectric in Jarabacoa (central).

The CNE said it has approved 36 of the 71 concessions requested, of 11 which are definitive and 25 provisional.

Puerto Plata’s 14 approvals leads all zones; Montecristi has 8; Pedernales 5, La Altagracia, 4; Azua 6; Barahona, Santo Domingo, San Pedro and Bonao, 2 each, and Valverde, Dajabón, Monte Plata, Hato Mayor, Maria Trinidad Sanchez and Santiago Rodriguez with one each.

Projects

Groundbreaking for two solar energy parks to be built at a cost of US$180.8 million in Las Calderas, Baní (south), took place in February, and would generate 100 megawatts starting in December.

Sunovia Energy signed an agreement with the Government on February 3, to install the first solar energy plant at a cost of US$200 million, which will reportedly create 2,500 jobs.

The CNE announced a US$2.0 billion investment to produce biodiesel from pinion resin in Montecristi province.

Local investors and Element Power, announce the construction of five wind energy parks in Montecristi, which would operate in 2011.

Who is Sunovia Energy? What solar plants have they built? 2500 employee for a technology that has few moving parts ? Is there a Solar Plant (PV Module Array) anywhere on the planet that produces 100 MWs? Most large plants are (less than) half of this capacity, which make me think another White Elephant project. Buildout by December? Therefore, the project should be 30% complete? Can anyone confirm the build status of said plant in Las Calderas, Bani? It has to be a very, very large area.

you see, Juango, when these announcements are made, they are not intended for the likes of you. they are made for the attentions of people who know absolutely nothing about the technologies, but are quick to celebrate the news releases. so, they tell us that we can , and will, produce gazillions of tons of gold from pica pollo leftovers, and the know nothings bleat with glee, because that indicates that we will be an energy superpower, and the showpiece of the western hemisphere. then, people like you come along and ruin the party with KNOWLEDGE AND INFORMATION. don´t be such a spoilsport!

theres more than US$ 4 billion dollars invested on alternative and conventional energies in the D.R alone so you are just making excuses and being pessimistic, this nation is going and will continue to go forward into the new future of energy!!!

the only issue is beauracracy and it needs to chance if we want to advance into the next lvl!

Dreadlocks is 100% correct, and that analogy can by applied to 99.9% of the GOV news releases and statistics. All BS intended for people who have 4th grade education, but know how to wave the flags (white, purple or red) and how to cast a vote. Throw in the crowd a chicken and a salami (literally) and everyone's happy.

well, Username, we hear about all these projects daily, and the usual suspects jump for joy. what they fail to take into consideration is the inputs necessary to realise these ambitions. so, we hear about how many quadrillion gallons of ethanol that will be produced annually, and the flags unfurl. some guys seem to think that if we mix cane juice with manajuana and cilantro in a large caldero, we will get automotive grade ethanol. they forget the fly in the ointment, that of energy. with electricity still an unresolved mystery in this glorious land, some of this stuff is pure puffing, and the politicos are quite aware of it.
