Santo Domingo. - Countries with high corruption also have extreme poverty, as some groups monopolize the nation’s wealth, said the World Bank chief economist for Latin America, Augusto de la Torre, in an analysis of the world’s current situation
He said the ego and excesses of a few has intensified the crisis even more.
However de la Torre said the process leading to the so-called “global crisis” is an example that the countries are interconnected and has repercussions between nations, due to the decisions taken to solve individual problems.
He said the entity to which he belongs has assumed the motto “a world without poverty,” promoting dialogues, and providing consultations and studies to nations that demand them.
The official, speaking Wednesday morning on the new the World Bank study for the Caribbean: “Development with Less Carbon” in the Telesistema Channel 11 program, said the report seeks to create awareness on the Caribbean situation, as one of the region most susceptible to the climatic change, and to motivate citizens to demand that their governors assume it as public policy.
As an example the economist cited a study which predicts the disappearance of some corals in about 15 to 20 years from the impact of climatic change, jeopardizing tourism and the economy on a large scale.

An oxymoron if you ask me. All this is deliberate. It's to prevent the poorer nations of the earth from industrializing and using there own raw materials for their own industries and everyone's buying into it line, hook, and sinker.

Good point but kind of hard to admit, without corruption the DR, all of us, could be 40% richer in general, than at present, but we can not accept this fact unless we are open to self criticism and introspection.
Just like when the Spaniards first came over and started to take advantage of the indians by offering them cheap trinkets for gold, we still love flashy things and "bling". The inflated ego of public officials is responsible for much of the corruption frenzy which is rampant in DR. But the worship of the personality by unrepentant sycophants is in the genes of Dominicans too. This mix, together with the lack of transparency and accountability, really is responsible for the many ills that affect us today.

Mr. Torquemada:
The concept of separateness of the individual is mistaken. We are all connected one way or
another, to each other, and the environment where we choose to live.
Corruption, pollutes the pool that we all swim together in, and creates many secondary harmful effects that come back to haunt us, individually and collectively. Corruption is the worst crime because it affects the greatest number of people, and writers such as Dante, have condemned the corrupt government officials, to the seventh and most terrible hell.
Since we are all in this together then we all benefit if there was less corruption, as there will be more spendable budgetary income for public works, food, education, health benefits, charity and pensions for the elderly.

Any list of the world's poorest countries is a list of either socialist economies or countries trying to recover from socialist policies.
It is a FACT. It cannot be disputed. The only exception is of a nation ravaged by a long war like Columbia.

Rich countries with the exception of the US are social democracies often with socialist governments and are mixed economies with a large proportion of the economy run or controlled by the state. Industries tend to alternate between being government owned or privately owned.
e.g. health care, electricity, transport ( trains etc ) social services, some food production in the social sector in France. Basically private industry collapses and need rescuing. Germany is slightly unique in that there is state and worker representation on the supervisory board of every major company. In fact the success of VW etc. has come through special laws giving the state a large say in the running of the company.
