SAN JUAN.- Supported by the agreement governor Luis Fortuño and president Leonel Fernandez signed at the beginning of this month, Dominican Republic will supply up to 85% of the ethanol for the island’s more than 2.5 million motor vehicles.

Secretary of State Kenneth McClintock said the production would help reduce Puerto Rico’s dependency on fossil fuel. "We want to try to make Puerto Rico independent of those few countries which control petroleum and a way to do is with ethanol produced in Dominican Republic which would help create jobs in Dominican Republic."

He said the plan is to produce ethanol in Puerto Rico’s southwest, though it would only be a small part of the island’s consumption, where all automobiles can already use the mixed fuel, considered renewable since it’s made form sugarcane and other crops.

McClintock said it’s possible to increase the amount of ethanol exported from Dominican Republic, as long as a distribution network is established. “It would be increased to a higher amount, but how much in don’t know specifically, but I know it’s going to create thousands of jobs in Dominican and Puerto Rico."

What about fixing DR's energy issues first?

Ethanol is another panacea. Uses more energy to produce than it replaces plus uses large amounts of water.

tread lightly, AnthonyC , or be ready to back up your statement with data

Does it take more energy to produce ethanol than it can provide as a fuel?
No. The energy content of ethanol, whether it comes from corn grain or cellulosic biomass, is greater than the amount of energy needed to produce ethanol. Although a considerable amount of media attention has been given to one report that claims ethanol has a negative net energy value (requires more energy to produce than it contains as a fuel), a majority of studies published in the last 10 years find that ethanol's net energy value is positive.

not good enough , AnthonyC. show me the study, or studies. your repetitive exhortation about fling with eagles is old and threadbare by now. cite me one study, please, that says you are right. then, look at those which say you are not. then, we will see who the duckling is.

AnthonyC, you don't know anything about ethanol. Keep your uninformed, silly opinions to yourself.

hatiiano, since you have de-forested your country, I consider this an excellent opportunity to plant switchgrass. It will give Haitians something to do instead of holding their hands out. Look into the alcohol yield per ton vs sugar cane. It will surprise you.

I don't think ethanol production will create jobs for Dominicans since they don't work in the sugar cane plantation, cutting the same. What they will wind up doing is importing Haitians to cut it for them. There is no direct benefit for DR. You noticed it says ethanol from Dr why not PR. The work
force is there to be exploited for US $2,00 a day, That is why they are looking to Dr not necessary
Dominicans, Go to Beazil and purchase ethanol there, which is #1 producer of the same,

My opinion only

US two dollars a day?..... in Puerto Rico for the work force hahahaha.....how about the equivalent of 1000 pesos a day minimum.....you must be one of those guys that turn your Dominican work force in to INS when payday comes around hahaha

FredCDobbs:
No, you are mistaken since i don't live there.
If you read my posters you could analyze a bit better, instead of jumping to conclusion.
The salary for Haitians has no increased since Trujillo's era, not at the Bateyes anyways, ran by military force. The profteer in this case is a Cuban living in Miami, who is a billioneer at the expense of Haitian labor force. I blame the DR government for allowing this to persist. Again so you could understand what am saying : It is to to the Puerto Rican interest that the row material comes from Dominican Republic ,since their pay scale is way hiegher and could not afford it, therefore since DR has plenty of sugar cane field and the labor force is there and they don't have to pay US scale since it is a free country and don't have to answer to the US department of labor.
Why don't they get it from Brazil as i said before ? they have plenty of ethanol for sale and DR does not have to be invaded by Haitians as they have been doing,.

A couple of Cubans who spend a lot of time here yes and I see where you are going as usual down the old Haitian road but the ethanol issue is a bit more complicated than that

Bird brain, if you were so smart you would not be working as a brazero in a foreign country. Since you are too stupid to get a half desent job at home, you had to emigrate to a 3rd world country such as Mexico . Visa to the USA is out of the question as a legal immigrant.
I leave the General Education Diploma(GED) to those ass holes that could not graduate with an Academic Diploma such as yourself, with science ,math and social studies, civics,a language besides English,(4) years @ which in this case would had been your second language as it would had been too hard for your poor little brain to absove.
You still did not explain the ethanol complicated subject for those that are reading your stupid statement, and are smarter than me. Is tt that you don't know?, or can not express yourself in your poor vocabulary? We all want to heare your opinion on such complex matter. BABOSO !!!
