Santo Domingo. - General Motors’ bankruptcy won’t affect the imports and the spare parts of Hummer, Chevrolet and Cadillac automobiles in the country, affirmed clavedigital.com, quoting the dealers of those brands Santo Domingo Motors (Chevrolet and Cadillac) and Latinoautos (Hummer).
With president Barack Obama’s announced reconstruction plan the automotive giant is expected to surface form the bankruptcy’s judicial process within 90 days, during which they said imports of original parts and automobiles will continue normally.
Latinautos said Hummer will continue having the same demand in the country, since the announcement by the Chinese company Sichuan Tengzhong Industrial Heavy Machinery bought the brand reaffirms the Dominicans’ confidence in acquiring the vehicle, apart from assurances that spare parts wouldn’t become scarce.
Santo Domingo Motors Chevrolet and Cadillac sales representative Carlos Medina said his company has held meetings to analyze strategies which will help sustain customer confidence. He added that for Mothers Day celebrations Chevrolet SUV sales were “good,” as more than 30 units were sold
Meanwhile Latinoautos sales representative Danny Diaz said operations continue normal because there’s a strong demand for Hummer in the country. “Things are and will remain well here in the country, because there are many Hummer buyers and with China’s purchase of this company things will remain the same.”
On Monday General Motors filed Chapter 11 protection, a collapse which cost more than US$172 billion.

lol. I have an H3 not an H2 and I would never get that nasty purple color. I told you that Hummer has more value in DR than USA. A nice reason is that you can convert it to run on propane. Should I get it washed at Kelvin car wash in Santiago??? You can have a beer and pick up a fast girl if you need. lol

I already had the H3 it was pretty good in the snow in Chicago, since they loose alot of value here in USA I sent it over to DR. I did take you advice and test drove the FJ it was nice. I am thinking about selling the H3 next year make the profit and the profit will pay for the FJ shipping/customs charges. The FJ looks like it would handle the snow very good, I did see many FJ in Santiago. The only thing that the FJ is missing is a sunroof

is there someone that has the skills and proper tools to install this in DR? Or should you have it installed in USA before shipping the FJ to DR? There are alot of mechanics in DR that say... o si yo se poner eso, and next thing you know you might have a leaky sunroof.
I dont know what toyota was thinking by not installing sunroofs on the FJ, they know that Toyota trucks are used all over latin America in the hot weather.
The 2009 jeep liberty has that roof that opens up completly, its too nice you look up and you see the sky. I wonder if the after market sells one like that for the FJ?

xwill7, i've seen quite a few aftermarket sunroofs installed on fj's on internet forums. Some of them did panoramic sunroofs that were quite big. If installed properly it's great, but I wouldn't do it in the DR. It's a kind of modification that has to bee done correctly, or else you end up with a spoiled car.
That said, although I like sunroofs a lot, I find that one of the biggest advantadges of my FJ is that since the front windshield is almost vertical, it doesn't get hot too fast.

My truck has the FJammer option and it's more than enough for me. It's louder than what I would tolerate, and it has a decent quality. If you really enjoy music, you can always swap the system. I recommend you to test drive one. The only 2 things you have to be really sure about with the FJ is the poor visibility (not an issue for me), and the way the back doors open, which is uncomfortable if you use the back seats too much.
About water crossings, you can safely pass any depth that goes up to the top of the tire. I wouldn't recommend anything more than that in any vehicle that is not diesel and isn't prepared for water crossing. I also recommend you search Youtube for videos of FJ's offroading. It's probably more capable than what you're ever going to have the courage to do :P

There are some people that can do it here, and cheaper than in the US, but I will not take my chances on the S/R bring crooked or developing water leaks, which might happen. Remember they don't do a lot of those here, so chances are they are not very proficient at it. It is very much like asking
questions regarding a great surgeon, the more operations he performs daily., the better he is.
Have it done in the states and don't risk being disappointed later.

Aftermarket sunroofs are best avoided.
Cars with factory sunroofs are engineered with it mind. Any Aftermarket installation is basically cutting a hole. Over time as the car flexes(Yes, cars flex!) it will cause gaps and leaks. Not to mention the whole compromising the cars rigidity which will effect handling.

yes, when I did the test drive the visibility was not great, but the Hummer is the sameway It does not bother me. You get the hang of it after a while. When I have time I am going to check one out with the subwoofer in the back.
generoso,
Thats what I was thinking, I will take it to a shop that here in USA. At least the give you some kind of insurance. When I had my first car in DR I had a dent and took it to a "bodyshop" that scared me. The guy took some masking tape and pounded the dent out with a hammer and screw driver. He did not use a rubber hammer, it worked but scrared me. lol
anthony,
Yes the sunroof can leak, but I was thinking of installing the fabric sunroof that slides back, like the one that comes installed in the 2009 jeep liberty. I dont think that it will leak since the roof will remain flexable. cross my fingers

DR should stop imports of these brands as they are subsidised by the US government. Alternatively sucharge of 30-40%. This would give Mexican VW etc. a chance, US pretends free trade but it is all mock. It is time DR started playing hardball and stopping US imports.

abc,
no one with a normal brain would drive a VW made in Mexico. Mexican cars are garbage low quality. Its just like the Japanise Toyota Corolla it does not have all of the safety as the American Toyota. Also, VW (euro trash car) will never dominate in DR. Dominicans like SUV vehicles and the VW SUV is not pimp. Not even a working girl will get into your VW car

Drove a VW for years..... Also a Japanese sports car. Both very reliable. Give the Mexicans a chance they will improve. Just needs a few Bachata personailities to promote them. It would seem that safety features in a country where seat belt use is not enforced may be a secondary issue. But the DR could save dollars and the government have extra tax revenue for a compensating duty for the subsidies the US gives its car industry. These subsidies are not fair to other countries that would like to export to the DR. For example if the US govenrment subsidises each GM car to the tune of 5000 dollars, about right at the moment, then the DR government could pick up this 5000 dollars from the importer, plus the same duties normally paid. This would be fair.

you probably drove the European VW version not the Mexican version. I have Mexican friends that do not even trust Mexican made cars. Also, don't know when the last time you where down in DR, but the AMET police ARE enforcing the seat belt rule. You do get a ticket if you are not wearing your seat belt

Enforcement tends to be lax in this part of the country ( Samana) A few weeks ago they decided to enforce the crash helmet rule; rounded up 50 motorcycles, took them to the pound; then a fine etc. But now back to normal - no-one wears a crash hat.
I am sure Mexican VW will improve. Especially so when DR and other markets switch from US cars. Never heard much bad about Toyota wherever manufactured. Perhaps Chinese cars would be better for DR economy. I bought a Chinese motor cycle 4 1/2 years ago - everyone laughed at the time but stlll going strong with only minor repairs and 2 new back tyres due to wear.

Its lighter - right - therefore goes further on a gallon of gas. Toyota are assmbled in Colombia among other places.

Yes, Thailand forced the mobile companies to work together and set prices. This is the way to do it for any developing country otherwise cherry picking takes place and complete coverage is not achieved. China has the same problem and the same sort of solution with a variation.
