AGUADILLA, Puerto Rico. - Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico yesterday sealed an alliance to harness trade, promote economic growth, jobs and development.

President Leonel Fernandez and Puerto Rico governor Luis Fortuño, upon having renewed the Dominican Republic –Puerto Rico Strategic Alliance, pledged to support to the private and public sectors to take advantage of the Free Trade Agreement with the United States and Central America.

During the signing of the pact in Aguadilla City Hall, Fernandez and Fortuño said they aim to take advantage of Dominican Republic’s other free trade agreements with other countries and blocs of nations, such as the recent Economic Association with the European Union and the Caribbean Forum (CARIFORUM).

“The only way to surpass the present crisis is by being creative, imaginative and by forging alliances that lead to the design of a development strategy,” Fernandez said during the ceremony.

For Fortuño the agreement will facilitate the re-launching of the different projects and initiatives.

We will have to see how much Uncle Sam allows Puerto Rico to do on their own. But this is a weird move by the governor who is the biggest supporter of statehood. The question is does he knows something we don't and haven't been told to the public because lately he has been trying to negotiate with other nations on their own.

Statehood is just a gimmick that the PNP has used for years to rally support as alternative to the PPD. Puerto Rico is a Latin American nation and Puerto Ricans are extremely nationalistic emotionally and culturally. All of the brain washing that the Puerto Rican right wingers and their Cuban gusano cronies have tried to use to eradicate their natural sentiment and right to sovereignty and independence has not worked.

Thier “commonwealth” experience is just colonialism in disguise and it is rapidly crumbling into nonsense. They have tried to forestall the inevitable, Independence and they have failed!

However, I don't think it's uncommon for the Governor of a U.S. state or local officials to meet with foriengn government officials for local trade as long as it's within FED guidelines. They do it in the Southern Border States/Border Cities with Mexico to work out better cross border trade opportunities. Don't know that they've hung out with the Mexican president but PR is a different situation I guess. As long as it's good for both sides, more power to em. As close ast these two countries are, it makes sense for them to work together. (or they just needed an excuse to hug... )

Luis Fortuno should take Leonel to Isla de Mona, where thousands of Dominicans drown and get eaten by sharks. Then he should throw him in and watch him get swept away by the precious currents. I love those currents, they prevent many dominicans from entering my beautiful island. Its funny how Leonel is trying to be some kind of Statesman like Puerto Rico's great Luis Munoz Marin. But he lacks the intelligence, the creativeness, and the oratory skills. Only Few Latin American politicans can earn the respect of the Americans and the world.

Josean, I agree. Remember the great Luis Munoz Marin started as an Independentista, but he was very cunning and knew that if Puerto Rico was going to take the Independent road, it would first have to raise the standard of living, create a middle class, and create schools. All of which Puerto Rico was lacking. Luis Munoz Marin and the commonwealth party were from a different era, and era that knew that at that moment Puerto Rico could not gain independence without ending up as another Dominican republic. This is the 21 century and the commonwealth system has become not only obsolete, by actually dentrimental to Puerto Rico's progress. Puerto Rico is in a constant state of Stagnation. The island who once produced the second highest standard of living in Latin America, no longer can boast such a claim. Its time for Puerto Rico to seek independence.

Im also glad that the Supreme court nominee, Sonia Sotomayor also favors Puerto Rican Independence. Because quite frankly she knows Independence means Puerto Rico will control its seabed rights and manipulate its great infrastructure, the best infrastructure in the carribean, to its benifit.

Puerto Rico making it out on it's own is not possible and anybody that look at the number know this.
Just look at the GDP 2006=($73.35) Billion 2007= ($72.03) billion and 2008=($70.59) billion while the GDP growth per year is 2006=(0.5%) , 2007= (-1.8%) and 2008= (-2.0%) with a revenue of just ($6.7) billion and a expenditure of ($9.6) billions. The last reported external debt had it at 78% of it's GDP in 2006 which by the way CIA FAQ has stopped reporting but based revenue/expenditure most economist have come to agree that is some where around 90% as of 2008 and in 2009 some even claim 94%. Which means whether Puerto Rico becomes independent or not USA is going to control it because they already own 90+ % of the country. Anyways that's a problem Puerto Rican have to deal with on their own. What does Haiti has to do with this topic anyways.btw most infastructure in USA is built by Fed Gov unless states opt-out of it like Texas. I think we can call it a "TROLL ALERT

I'm not a Leonel supporter but lately i think he is taking the right steps to bring investors/business into the country. It's not easy to end 100 years of political corruption and abuse of tax money in 10 years. He has done better than any president i know about. I know he gets carry away expending sometimes but hey he ain't perfect but is laying the ground work for the next guy that wants to follow.

Although I praise Leonel in building relations, I don't think he should spend too much time in PR. Making treatments with PR is like asking a child to come out and play without the parent's consent.

SOLPLAYA,

The DR is abundant and full of BEAUTIFUL people. Just because the ones that get there on yolas may usually fit a certain profile and come from the lower class it does not mean the Dominicans in DR look a certain way. It is unfortunate that they have to take that horrendous trip to get out of poverty. Unfortunately, they do not have the welfare system the "Welfare State" of Puerto Rico relies on.

It was Puerto Ricans that once had to come over to the DR to cut sugar cane and work on the railroads.

The Dominican middle class is much classier and educated than the PR counterparts, so please, compare apples to apples.

Check out the beautiful people from my country:

Bailarin-Eating the bread crumbs is about right. You should know what a crumb looks like.To us it looks like a Dominican getting beaten whenever we feel like it.A crumb is what you feed a Dominican if you don't let them drawn first.A crumb of bread is what Dominicans risk their lives for to escape a shithole.

SOLPLAYA,

You are right, sorry I didn't do my research correctly, not all Puerto Ricans are on welfare.. the rest of them are on SSI.. so you are looking to whiten the population in PR and PR has been trying to get whiter for the last 100 years? so what is the goal? a whole new breed of "white trash"?

By no means, far from it, Dominicans are ideal citizens as a whole, but if you take a trip to any city in the US where there is a high concentration of Puerto Ricans vs High Concentration of Dominicans, you'll clearly see how 4 out of 10 Puerto Ricans you come across are drug addicts, thieves, alcoholics, vs 1 out of 10 Dominicans... Puerto Ricans really knew how to coin the term "Tecato"

Look, I don't have an issue with Puerto Ricans and have some great PR friends, but people like you, are truly despicable. If you hate "hispanics" so much, why don't you do yourself a favor and take yourself out this world and save yourself the heartache of seeing latinos grow in good and bad way

Killuminati: With all this Marxism("All men are created equal") taught in schools, almost EVERYWHERE in the western hemisphere. It is going to take one hell of a political support and cautelous maneuvers (as one might end up getting sniped) to convince the people that the white race adapts easier at creating civilizations. What I would seem more appealing to the public is an eugenics program in which the more undesirable(within a ratio of weak/dumb/hereditary diseases..etc) people get sterilized no matter their race since there are a few good blacks in the upper hand of the black bell curve anyway and some bad whites, it's not going to seem too "tyrannical" to the people and would encourage them to be better.
Written by: cyberdragon, 9 Jun 2009 9:28 AM

Those who show no mental aptitudes beforehand, will be sterilized. That, I believe will appeal more to the people because everyone has an opportunity I am pretty sure even the white race was a sh!tty race (just like the blacks are now), at some point, but the ice age, the dark age, took care of the white bad apples and they didn't need miscenegating with better ones to get better like you are suggesting. My point is: Any race can get better, but with blacks as they are currently, we will need a REAL strainer.
