Santo Domingo. - The electricity bill’s jump this month is much higher than the 6.4% for scales of customers’ daily consumption.

According to the Electricity Superintendence resolution, the four billing scales rose 12.1%, 16.7%, 2.4% and 2.2%.

Those increases are not only above the global average announced by the Superintendence, but also causes a multiplier effect, so if consumption rises in a determined percentage, the billing will increase in a much higher proportion.

The idea of the billing structure is so consumers try to save energy, although what occurs in Dominican Republic is that the billing varies in several scales according to customer consumption.

For the first 200 kilowatt/hours consumed the billing went from RD$3.12 to RD$3.50, or a 12.1% jump.

In the 201 to 300 kilowatt range the price went from RD$4.71 to RD$5.50, for a 16.7% increase, whereas the consumption between 301 and 700 kilowatts rose from RD$7.00 to RD$8.57 this month, for a 22.4% jump.

In principle, I see nothing wrong with such a billing structure. The point is to provide disincentives for excessive consumption, this billing structure is a step in said direction.

Lets see how effective it is. Perhaps what we need to start doing is start subsidizing or investing in alternative sources of energy. Lets take some of the money to develop wind-farms or solar farms to start augmenting the amount of energy and cut our dependence on foreign oil. Ha ha, I sounds like a democrat :-) Not my intention, but there are worst things to emulate.

Does excessive consumption means turning on the street lights at 4:30 P.M. when there is a black out in poor neighborhoods?

Until the Electric Companies which distribute to the consumers are privatized, managed by foreigners, and the illegal "add-on" to the systems are eliminated, these prices for electrical service will continue to elevate.
One of the main problems is the elevated payrolls, which cause the overall expenses of the"companies" to be exorbitant, andwhich must be recouped by even higher prices being charged for a totally inadequate and antiquated personnel management system.
When a job isn't being done properly, or in a timely manner, fire the person doing that job and hire one who is competent . Instead, these "managers" just hire more people and leave the incompetent ones in place.
Wind and Solar power is not the answer many people think it to be. In the short run, it is more expensive to impliment and maintain while producing a much smaller megawatt output at a higher cost/unit of electricity.

There is no logic in payin for a service u don't receive !! I'm sure that if the electricity companies were more responsible when it comes to actually giving electricity...then more people will be willing to pay for it!

isosamar;

Who, in their right mind would accuse the electric distributors, owned by this inept government, to be LOGICAL in anything that they do?
They are the most ILLOGICAL NIMCOMPOOPS known to mankind.

Solar and Wind are the answer. The world has taken the cheap way out and now we are starting to see its results. Burning cheaper fossil fuels got us into this mess. What makes people think getting out of it will be cheaper.
