SANTO DOMINGO.- Of the 41 power plants available, 17 are shut down or out of service due to outstanding Government debt, for lack of fuel or by “executive orders” of their owners.
On Sunday when electricity demand is at its lowest, the power companies’ output reached a mere 119 megawatts, leading to blackouts as long as 10 hours.
Of the power company Ege-Haina’s 11 plants, only two units were on line; output of Barahona’s coal fired unit was at 44.1 megawatts today, and Sultana del Este, in San Pedro, had 74 MW.
In addition to Ege-Haina’s plants out of service, are Cogentrix II and III; Falcando II and III; Higüamo I and II, Los Mina V and VI and San Felipe of Puerto Plata, whose shutdown affects the northern region Cibao.

Next thing you know it's a conspiracy by the private sector to make the honorable Ing. Radhames Segura look bad.

All 3 Cogentrix units burn expensive diesel (#2FO). It is only operated as a last resort. Two trains are online now, very rare. Sultana del Este is a 150 MW barge, which is at 50% load (85MW at present). Itabo 1 is out. At this moment 1380 MW production. Not too good. Did AES's Mr.de la Rosa ever get paid the $300MM US he was asking for ? Will the Generators shut down completely due to "no payment" from the EDEs? LF is out of town, he cant be blamed for this one, can he? It certainly is not his fault, Teflon Leo, my hero.

can someone tell me what percentage of power comes from coal generated power stations, what percentage from oil and what percentage from hydro power...seems to me that much power is consumed for nothing because there are no meters or is stolen and if this ws fixed maybe there would be more money for the stations to operate or if there was not so much money being paid out in corrupt salaries and fees the same would be achieved ..but either way i agree that Segura should be fully investigated and if necessary prosecuted

Ricardo, I will try to shed light on your question above. Difficult to do since units are switched out all the time.
3 Coal fired: Barahona (45mw), Itabo 1&2 (125mw ea)
several small hydro stations (~330mw total) largest Tavera1&2 (45 mw ea)
NG fired AES Andres (300mw) Los Minas 5&6 (110 mw ea)
#2FO/Diesel Fired Cogentrix 1,2,3 (100mw ea), Haina TG (100 mw)
#6 Bunker HFO Fired all others approx 1800 mw installed...several not operational
I did not include private power utilities as they are not interconnected to the grid. The above are nameplate installed capacities. Rarely do they produce design capacity for a multitude of reasons.

Should we centralize energy generation or keep it broken up into several sources (owners) feeding local regions?
We need energy independence now! We need Dominican to be responsible and pay for what they consume! We need to upgrade to the new technologies and distribution! Unless you want to do a TESLA and send energy via electromagnetic waves?

Privatize the energy sector NOW.

Are you kidding??? Do you have any idea how hard it is to GET THE COMPANY to give you power, transformer, or meter? Don't put all the blame on the people. I've been waiting 6 months to a year and all I get is excuses while they power co. reps take the $$ into their pockets!

In this case (and only in this case) you can't blame the government. 56% of the generated electricity
in this Country is stolen. Why should the Government bail out the electricity company's time after time. Let the whole system crash ! Afterwards the Power companies will deliver only to areas where they get paid for there service.

you guys cannot pay your bill to keep the light own, but your government is ready to put $1billion
bond on the international market. What analyst on their right mind is going to recommend a buy on that in today's market environment.
