SANTO DOMINGO.- The eastern La Altagracia and La Romana provinces have Dominican Republic’s highest tele-density, with 163 cell phones for each 100 inhabitants in the former, and 111 in the latter.
Dominican Telecom Institute (Indotel) president Jose Rafael Vargas also revealed that Santo Domingo has 100 cell phones for that same number of inhabitants, adding that adults, youngsters and children were included in the calculation.
He said the prevalence of tourism explains the situation in those two provinces.
The official provided the figures Monday in the forum Dominican Republic Today: Technological Development and the Society of Knowledge, supported by the Society for Information and Knowledge Commission (CNSIC).
“In 1996 we barely had one cellphone for each 100 inhabitants and the few were concentrated in the country’s main cities. We barely had 82,000 cellphones in the entire country,” Vargas said.

I would also like to know how much does it cost to have DSL (high speed internet in La Romana). Also, for those who know, is the speed comparable to what we get here in the States (and North America in general).
DSL cost around 3,000 per month. Yes, it is as fast as here in the states. Tricom is pretty good
