Santo Domingo.- Despite the economic crisis and the A-H1N1 pandemic, Dominican Republic’s tourism continues climbing and the number of foreign visitors grew 2.41% in May.

Caribbean Tourism Bourse president Felipe Aquino made the affirmation last night during 13th BTC 2009 fair, inaugurated in the capital’s hotel Dominican Fiesta. “Those negative external factors haven’t been able to shut off the lights of hope for our tourism industry.”

Aquino, speaking to a packed salon of tour operators, travel agents, investors, real estate leaders and government officials, hailed the country efforts to diversify the tourist product and to adapt them to the international market’s tendencies.

He said the contracts and the promotion of tourism have attracted a global market, contributing to the increase and the expectation of a good summer season.

Interesting. Who compiles this data that Felipe Aquino is using? Is that 2.4% increase over previuos month April 09? Or is it 2.4% increase compared to May 2008? The real impact is seen in the businesses related to the tourism industry (bar/rest., hotel/resorts, etc). How are they doing in the various regions of the country?

It must be strictly related to some law that says someone gets money the higher it goes.

no it is true but the spending patterns have changed ...the spike is also due to swine flu and shoot outs in Mexico .......Punta Canas #1 competitor

I agree. With the current Civil War in Mexico (to call it otherwise would be disingenuous); Dominican Republic has become the preferred destination (along with Cuba). Let's just hope that is enough to keep the motor running so to speak. Things are bad all over (Especially here in North America). Being employed is not the norm; but the exception.

the cigar industry is under siege in America and tourism in PP is a tired old horse that needs renovation and a little magic Punta Cana and Samana have much more appeal to travel agents and tour operators PP is head on for the low ball market with Cuba

SPM and Juan Dolio are dead no money at all in the streets- no tourism at all and lights on/of 7/8 times a day. Any tourists here head for Bavaro where there are lights. Anyway, if any one asks me where to go from the states I tell them anywhere but here. Everything is closed at 12 and being a tourist, I want to Party and not be a prisoner in a Hotel.

I realize PP/Sosua/Cabarete are way off their numbers and so is all of the Samana Penn. If JD/SPM are dead, That only leaves Bayahibe and PC/Bavaro areas, which would have to be up by at least >3.5% to make the total number of 2.4% increase for the sector. What is the truth?

The numbers are something made up. There's no object to relate them to for a accurate comparison. Typical of my fellow Dominicans and it makes them look like fools to any educated person.

This is similar to how they describe how much cocaine is confiscated in "portions". Whats a portion? How about describing it with its actual weight so every police and political official can't make some disappear.

Yes that's right folks the number of foreign visitors grew 2.41% in May. Compared to May of 1984 is what was left out.

Hmmm...well...actually I am not seeing much of a difference from last year or the year before. The April/June period was not noticibly different, thus the prediction is probably pretty much spot on. Punta cana International is seeing increased flight arrivals over last year and more pax per flight on average.

We all want everything to fail...so it seems. if it is good news...we look at it as being inaccurate. How sad a society we have become that we can only accept bad news. We thrive on negativity, as seen often on this board and many others like it.

Today i woke up...the day was like every other.....life goes on...and I am happy.

Cheers

Fred you truly believe anything. So why don't you explain to us all what a cocaine "portion" is since your so in the know? Also why don't you share with us what the comparison time frame or value is for this increase in passengers. Without specifics you can twist numbers to mean anything you want and skew the truth. Quite a typical procedure to misinform the uneducated. How about doing a comparison of the number of arrivals of tourists and the collection of fees and taxes from these same tourists and watch how different the numbers are.

Sadly there are so many uneducated people that things like this go unquestioned.
