Santo Domingo.- U.S. senator Kirsten Gillibrand, who occupied Hillary Clinton’s bench today said she is in favor of easing the restrictions her country imposed on remittances to different parts of the world, as a result of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks against the United States, to contribute to bolster the economy of developing countries like the Dominican Republic.
The U.S. legislator made the suggestion while talking to reporters in the National Palace, after meeting with president Leonel Fernandez.
She said it was a good meeting and among the topics discussed with Fernandez is the possibility that Dominican residents in the United States can increase the bulk of the remittances they send to the country, which is currently just 500 dollars per person.
Gillibrand said since Dominican Republic isn’t among the countries listed as harboring or promoting terrorism, each nation should be looked at on a case by case basis.
She added that she spoke with the Dominican chief executive on topics such as drug trafficking, agriculture, immigration and the electric system, stressing the use of new technologies in that sector.
