Santo Domingo.- U.S. senator Kirsten Gillibrand, who occupied Hillary Clinton’s bench today said she is in favor of easing the restrictions her country imposed on remittances to different parts of the world, as a result of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks against the United States, to contribute to bolster the economy of developing countries like the Dominican Republic.

The U.S. legislator made the suggestion while talking to reporters in the National Palace, after meeting with president Leonel Fernandez.

She said it was a good meeting and among the topics discussed with Fernandez is the possibility that Dominican residents in the United States can increase the bulk of the remittances they send to the country, which is currently just 500 dollars per person.

Gillibrand said since Dominican Republic isn’t among the countries listed as harboring or promoting terrorism, each nation should be looked at on a case by case basis.

She added that she spoke with the Dominican chief executive on topics such as drug trafficking, agriculture, immigration and the electric system, stressing the use of new technologies in that sector.

New electrical technologies ? The DR cannot seem to make the older, simpler technologies work, how the hell are they going to use newer technologies? Senator, ask the fearless leader, LF, why there so much corruption in his administration. A simple question, no specific topic needed. Drug traffic is on the increase, not because they can't stop it, it is that there are government officials that promote it, for obvious financial gain. Same for Electrical Problems in the country. Failed State indeed. Go back and tell Sec Hillary, not to allow any money flow to the DR until we see an improvement in stopping the corruption that exist at all levels of the Military and Government.

Juango I agree its time for LF to lead by actions and not words. Start by cleaning up the incredible amount of corruption and the drug problem will decrease at the same time. Problem is this will mean a lot of affluent people will go to jail. They deserve it and should. I believe that once the corruption problem is dealt with a lot of the other problems will have been reduced dramatically. Drugs for example will be a lot less. Then we could more easily concentrate on basic things we should be able to get right like having 24/7 electricity like everywhere else in the civilized world.
