SANTO DOMINGO.- Dominican Republic is one of the region’s nations were an airfare to anywhere in the world cuts a deep hole in passengers’ pockets, as the tax slapped on a ticket’s real cost is as high as 52%.

The tax on airfares is so voracious it gobbles up seasonal specials by airlines, whose prices always skyrocket even when they are bought abroad, because the Government charges the airlines a fee per passenger entering or leaving the country, regardless of origin.

In the purchase of each ticket the flyer pays a tax for the Tourism Ministry, the Civil Aviation Institute, the Airport Security Corp, the Air Force, the Airports Department and the airports management company Aerodom.

In addition to those fees collected by decree, each airfare also pays 16% ITBIS Tax and another levy for issuing the ticket.

A Santo Domingo-Miami roundtrip fare for September 22 reserved July 2 cost in an airline US$363.46, US$198.00 of which is the basic cost, US$31.68 is Itbis, a US$20 tax is applied to the exit and US$113.72 are aeronautical fees.

Another Santo Domingo-New York roundtrip airfare reserved yesterday to fly September 19, costs US$208, but the taxes are US$167, whereas the ticket for a Santo Domingo-Paris flight reserved yesterday for the same date costs RD$21,564, whose taxes are RD$17,904.

The same occurs in the Santo Domingo-Ft. Lauderdale roundtrip airfare reserved for that date, which cost US$265.68, with US$138.80 in fees and taxes, or 52% of the cost.

Central Bank figures show that more than four million passengers arrived in the country by air between January and November, of which 3,140,253 were tourists or nonresident foreigners, or 87.1% of the total.

I wish they would lower the fight taxes... More people would travel and many would even make more than one trip back home during the year. Try paying close to $1,000 in December.

I travel frequently to SDQ (from FLL). Always buy sale airfares @$9.00 or less each way on Spirit Air. I pay total ~$130 each time ($18 goes to Spirit).

Visit Mexico or St Maarten it is a cheaper (& less hassel) overall vacation (if you stay in smaller places). btw the Sunset Beach Bar at SXM has Presidente @ $2 a bottle on a very nice beach with jumbo jets landing overhead. Most economical time to go is now through Dec. 15.

No wounder a pay more than $1200 on airfare to spend a week in the DR. That is why Dominicans that live at the other side of the US does not visit frequently because of the high cost of the tickets.

It's like everything else in the DR...... bass ackwards, and dumb....it is what you make out of it that counts.

xwill7 I think you meant to say that San Juan is even worse than Miami,LAX or other USA airports ,,they and the american airlines are a total disgrace and are amongst the wost in the world .Compared to them it is a plesure to fly into la Romana or Santo Domingo ,,and Zona Dominicana you are wrong because often it i salmost as cheap to fly to LAX as it is to JFK ...is all crazy

I just flew Jet Blue to Santiago on a buddy pass on friday and paid like $76 in taxes...As for San Juan, It has got to be the worst airport in the entire planet, heck I was treated better in Havana. No costumer service skills and rude customs agents add up to one stinking travel experience. I rather pay higher taxes in Santiago and get treated like a human being than stop in San Juan to all those snotty .......

I actually pay less from Chicago to Santiago. It all depends on what city you are coming from. I have heard that for people in NJ Puerto Plata is cheaper.
Captin,
yes if you live in Florida you can take advantage of the $9 spirit fares. everyone else is not as lucky.

PR is a much smaller island than DR. Could you imajine if they DR only had three airports? More delays man. Do you just wans an airport in SD, Santiago, and Punta Cana? What will happen when you add the traffic from Puerto Plata and La Romana? They can't handle that flow

Danny,
At least you do not have to transfer planes. The only direct flight from Chicago goes to Punta Cana. I stay in Santiago so its not worth the 5 hour drive back to Santiago. I always have to connect in Miami, NYC, or Atlanta.
But I have found that different carriers are cheaper at different times of the year. I flew Delta last December, Jetblue in Spring, American in the Summer, but Iam not sure about this December who will have the lowest cost

Do I have to pay ITBIS as a registered resident? I have every intention of staying in this country, but I need to get back to the UK now and again to see my family - I'd love for them to come visit me here but the hefty costs are just too prohibitive, we're not a 'well-off family', I'm here for reasons beyond my control, but I love living here - just please reduce the cost of flying here, and so many more people would come - including my family!

Seldom, and seldom Do I agree with dobbs, I hate that jerk but he's right... and guess what? they just made another airport by or in Samana.... Maria Montez airport is a waste.. I fell that the country only needs 3 airports.... SDQ in the Capital, the Puerto Plata airport and Punta Cana...

If the Tickets to DR where cheaper I would most definitely fly there more often...
Did you know that you can take a plane from the Capital to Samana for only U.S.$45.00
sounds good..

I wish DR had more Bed and Breakfast places, "and owned by Dominicans please"....
The Big Hotels are OK.. in some aspect but, I am Very Humble..

Heee, $45 US - where did you find that price?? It costs $75/$85 each way (advertised price 3,000 pesos), I live close to Portillo and have used the facility many times. As for B&B, there are many places, maybe not owned by Dominicans - but you're welcome to use my kitchen if you'd prefer to cook yourself!! Oh, if you're going to do the cooking, I'm rather partial to Mangu (?) not sure about the spelling, spanish is not my native lingo. $45 US is 'out of season' price, if you're lucky.

With all competition in Caribbean for tourist dollars, DR gov. is perhaps being very foolish with all of these ridiculous surcharges.

DR has a lot to offer compared to competition, but these exorbitant fees would clearly turn some tourist away to places such as St. Martin, PR, etc.

What the heck are these leaders [term used extremely loosely here] thinking about with proliferation of unnecessary airports?

Are they [gov. officials and families] skimming money from these projects? Most probably-nothing would surprise me.

Please, no more airports, unless they are privately funded.

FredC,

Comments are right on.

Cuba, BTW, is pretty desperate presently, and may offer even lower fares to promote more tourism, increase revenue.

Things so bad in Cuba right now, that they have postponed their previously announced five year congress. Party is pretty scared about letting people really know just how bad things are.

BTW, I am back in US now as of yesterday.

FredC,

Having BBQ tomorrow. I'll be smoking ribs and pork butts-man, I really missed that kind of food last couple of months. Of course, there would be some obligatory hot dogs as well, even some white ones [specialty of region, but I clearly prefer red ones. White ones are buffalo meat].

Tonight, wife dragging me out to Arab restaurant.

FredC,

As I wait for wife to get ready to go out to restaurant, I sit here drinking an Argentinian Cabernet Sauvignon which was clearly a steal at $45/case-name: "Casa de Campo". Name is reason why we bought it. We were there when place first opened up, cousin was manager, and really had great time, so we bought it to remember.

Went back to liquor store today to buy another case and they wanted $96. I like the wine, but in that price category there are other that I like a little more perhaps. Should have bought 10 cases at lower price, darn!

It is environmentally soud to have higher taxes. If people ration themselves to 2 - 3 flights a year GHG is cut. It is better to take one six week holiday a year than 6 one week holidays. If course ideally most people would come by large yacht. If people stay in an environmentally friendly 'green' resort it is possible that total GHG is cut compared wtih staying at home.
Eco-resorts are the way forward.
