Santiago.- Customs director  Rafael Camilo yesterday headed the inaugural of the Agency’s new regional offices in Santiago, which will decentralize all customs activities in the North Region and expedite the merchandise retrieval process.

Camilo said the start of operations of the new offices is part of its decentralization policy, aimed at easing congestion, which benefits Dominican Republic’s importers and exporters and users.

Decentralization is what is getting us in trouble at the border with Haiti! Decentralization has allowed the 5 provinces along the border to conduct pseudo-legal commerce integration with Haiti that has lead to the polarization of that region from DR and it is a nucleating site for the eventual disintegration of the Republic!

Is this really necessary? Or could this be just another opportunity for perpetuating nepotism?

If it will help the people and business in general, then I am all for it. I just don't want to create unnecessary jobs and extra expenses for the government.
