An Abu Dhabi power plant.
Santo Domingo.- The agreement to build at least two coal fired and natural gas power plants is ready for the signature of the Dominican Government and the Arab Emirate Abu Dhabi, news source listin.com.do reports.
The Dominican state-owned power companies CDEEE), and Abu Dhabi’s International Petroleum Investment Company (IPIC) agreed on the joint venture, specifically a 600 megawatt combined cycle natural gas plant in Pepillo Salcedo (Manzanillo), Montecristi province (northwest) jointly with a natural gas terminal.
The negotiations began after president Leonel Fernandez’s visit to Abu Dabi last November when he met with crown prince Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who pledged to visit Dominican Republic with plans to invest in energy and fuels.
Later Fernandez sent a delegation headed by CDEEE executives, which was followed by a visit in March by delegation from the state-owned company Mubadala, and another visit that same month by a delegation from an IPIC subsidiary, manufacturer of power plants.
“The agreement is ready to be signed by both States and the project would start by guaranteeing new medium term generation, using cheap fuel,” said a source quoted by Listin.

Does Crown Prince Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan know that CDEEE/DR Gov, owes the DR Power Companies >$700 MM USD at present time, and there are no real prospects of any payment in the near future?

Foreigners are constantly scammed into investing money in the DR with hopes of a windfall of profits in return. This is something Dominicans are good at. I am a Dominican and will not invest any money into the country until the corruption problems are fixed. Any time a person is seen making money there will always be a corrupt politician or police official with their hand out looking for a free handout. Until this is fixed it's a waste of time investing in anything in the DR.

xwill, you have a point, but the Arab States/Emirs/Kings/leaders/etc. are educated (key point) and make sound investments in most cases. The DR at this moment and for the near future, is NOT a sound investment. I see the DR running out of platanos, well before the Middle East runs out of oil. I think LF has been ROYAL bug bitten. He like the expensive cloths (wife included), fancy jets, fancy foods & wines, lots of travel... Perhaps he should be over there (Arab States) instead of SD. He was born in Villa Juana and educated in NYC. ..doesn't that qualify him as Royalty ? Instead of robes and a table cloth on his head, perhaps Mel could lend him his Vaquero hat ! He (LF) would fit right in !

It's nearing the time that Dominicans learn to speak Farsi... Did anyone ever win in a bargain made with an Arab.
They will literally own this country. They now own about 14% of America....
Might be a good deal if we went back to a King... better than pacifying... they cut off the hands of people who steel...

juan,
you are right the demand for oil will continue to go down with the newer cars coming out. Chevy and nissan will soon have their electric cars in the US. When the oil money decreases will they increase the price of the power to the people in DR

Learning Farsi isn't going to help us unless we are dealing with Iran.
Perhaps you meant to say we should learn Arabic.

Well, here we are again with all the "experts" telling us "how the cow eats the cabbage"
Prob.em is, the damn cow can only gum hell out of the stuff.
This deal about the Arabs building power plants has been floating around for almost 10 years now, give or take a couple of years. Also in the rumor mill was the building of a new Port Facility at Pepillo Salcedo (Manzanillo), since that is one of nthe few "hurricane proof" deep water embatments in the Caribbean Basin.
Government corruption has negated such a venture each time it was brought up.
The Arabs were blocked a couple of years ago on the coal-fired plants because of governmenr insistance for "up front" money in guarantees. Instead the gov split funds on the coal fired plants, causing a wake up call to all investors and the projects were dropped.
With that background in place, what do think the prospects are for this announcement to come to fruition?????????????
Yeah, good question, HUH???

Welcome back, Billy. Agree with your sentiments, but at least the project makes sense: Natural Gas, Manzanillo port and electricity by just the Arabs that have and do spend money.

abel, you are correct. The reason LF & his Court Jesters seek foreign investment is quite obvious to most folks. It is the MONEY!!!, money in their pockets, more money to steal.... It is the basic "Greed" function that has blinded "many, if not most" powerful Dominicans. You see, Dominican society has learned all too well from the USA, Power=Money=Class/Respectability. What the fools have yet to learn is, that is not true ! I would not even piss on most of their graves in order to water the plants that may be growing there, that would be give them too much recognition. btw, I did see a Big Shot-Fucionario (PLD) at Vesuvio Rest last year, order JW Blue with "Rojo" Country Club Soda,,, I believe Class cannot be bought.., but don't tell them...

The DR hasn't learned it's greedy and corrupt ways from the USA. They learned all that from the
Spanish Court of Isabel and Fernando who learned it from LOUIS'S court.
Before that, it was a lesson from the Arabs who had dominated Spain for some 800 years and imposed their governmental and economic philosophy duing that period. The problem is that NOTHING has changed, philosophically since then in the DR and many other Latin States. It seems to be genetic.
So, is it any doubt that Leonel would turn to Arabs in his attempt to get more money funnekked into the DR economy?
Figure it out for yourself after reading a bit of history. Maybe you'll have a change of heart, ya think???
